Hi Linda,
There were no steamships direct from Norway to North America in
1864. There were several sailing vessels, direct from Norway, but only to
the port of Quebec, in Canada. At that time, I do believe the majority of
Norwegians to the US midwest arrived via Quebec, either direct or
indirect. None of the sailing vessels departed from Trondheim. There was
one from Tromsø and several from Bergen.

If he arrived via Quebec, either direct by sail or indirect by steamship,
unfortunately there are no surviving passenger lists for the port of Quebec
before 1865. Here are the Quebec ship arrivals 1864

For your sake, I hope he arrived via New York. As mentioned above, it
would have to be by indirect passage. For New York, he probably would have
taken a Wilson Line "feeder-ship" from Trondheim to Hull, England, then
train to Liverpool. He would have boarded a transatlantic steam ship at
Liverpool and sailed to New York. The total trip would have taken about 2
1/2 weeks from Trondheim to New York. There were 29 ships from Liverpool
arriving at New York in September 1864. You can see the list at Steve
Morse's one-step pages http://www.stevemorse.org/
go to the one-step Castle Garden ship
lists http://www.stevemorse.org/ellis/boat2.html
Each of the ships has a hyper-link, but to view the manifest for the
ship(s) you need an Ancestry subscription. If you do have a sub, you can
also search the Castle Garden Passengers.
As far as name is concerned, he could be listed as Andrew, but also may be
Anders, Andreas, Andfind for example. His last name might be a "farm name"
from the farm he was living on when he emigrated, or, his patronym which
might be recorded as you have written, or as. . Throndsen, Thronsen,
Trondsen, Tronsen :-}
Good luck,
Sue
