Okay listers . . .I'm trying again.
Marian has been really busy creating these fabulous "podcasts" but not too
many people are visiting, nor are they asking many questions !! Over
1,000 of our list members are doing US research, so would really benefit,
so why aren't they tuning in ?
This got me thinking. As a PC user who spends most of her life in front
of the computer, before October 6th, I had never even heard the term
podcast, but I didn't let that stop me. So why is it stopping you? Are
you saying 'oooo' what is that ? 'oooo' it won't work for me ! 'oooo' I
have Quicktime but I get a broken icon when I try to play the
podcast. 'oooo' I had better not write to Marian, as I must be the only
one, so she will think I'm silly ......! wrong thinking !
First, what is a podcast ?
___wikipedia.org "Podcasting, a portmanteau of Apple's "iPod" and
"broadcasting", is a method of publishing files to the Internet, allowing
users to subscribe to a feed and receive new files automatically by
subscription, usually at no cost. It first became popular in late 2004,
used largely for audio files. "
___podcastingnews.com "Oxford English Dictionary Adds Podcast Definition.
August 13, 2005. William Safire, take note: podcast has been added to the
Oxford English Dictionary."
Second, I don't have a Mac.
___Nor do most of us <grin>
Third, I have Quicktime installed, but I can't get the podcast to run.
___This could be a common problem for many of you, which can be solved by
simply going to Apple.com and downloading (free) the latest version of QT
player for Windows users.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
. . or, you can also download the file itself and play it on your
RealPlayer or Windows Media Player.
So, do yourselves a big favour and go to the Port of Entry index (entry)
page to see for yourself.

To date, there are four broadcasts
POE 1, October 6, 2005.
Discussion of records for immigrants who arrived after 1924, derivative
citizenship, minor naturalizations, and U.S. outbound passenger lists
(departure lists).
POE 2, October 10, 2005.
Enemy alien registration in World War I, immigrant "sponsors," and
certificates of arrival.
POE 3, October 15, 2005.
Declaration of Intention search, manifest annotations, requesting visa
files, and new microfilm publications.
POE 4, October 24, 2005.
Timing is Everything. Discussion of errors in immigration and
naturalization records, derivative citizenship, information found on
naturalization records, and some more on minor naturalizations.
Marian has asked that you send her an email from the link at the bottom of
the pages, with your own research questions, or if you want clarification
of something you heard &c., to be addressed in future
podcasts. Apparently the space available to write is limited, so you can
also send a regular email to
Finally, I encourage ON list (TheShipsList) discussion of this email and
the podcasts (broadcasts), whether you love them, or hate them, whether the
process confuses you etc. Make sure you include Marian's address in the
email, so she can receive your feed back too, at
Don't forget too, that I have now placed permanent links to the POE entry
page on the TSL "Resource" webpage, in two locations, called . . "Port of
Entry" podcast (broadcast) index page . . with little yellow "new" .gifs

(in other words, on-topic).
