Subject: [TSL] Italia - Sweden to US - 1884
Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2007 19:50:56 -0700
Christine Italia Andersen (later changed to Andreen) was born on the Atlantic Ocean aboard the ship Italia. Her birth date was 8 April 1884. Her family was emigrating from Sweden to the US, father's name Swen Peter Andersen. They settled in Chicago, but (we think) arrived at New York. Her daughter says that the ship was of the Cunard line and years later Christine had to apply to Wales (at great expense) to obtain her birth certificate. She avoided the expense by getting her birth verified by other means.
In looking at Ancestry's lists, it seems that the Italia was making the Mediterranean to New York run in 1884, and was of the Anchor Line. It is hard to picture a family from Sweden coming via Italy. Was there another ship named the Italia? Is there any connection between the Anchor and Cunard Lines - i.e. one bought by the other, etc.? Could the ship have been the "Princess Italia" for example, or was it just in port at the same time as the family was trying to think of a name for the baby?
Thanks for any clues about this,
Ivy
