Hi John,

There is no problem with saving and using standard workbook
format as you are transcribing - in fact it is more convenient as
it will retain the column widths etc. that you may choose to
reset to make input easier.

CSV only takes up a sixth of the space of standard format however
so that when your file gets too big, you may not be able to store
the entire piece on a floppy disk when you are doing back-ups.

It is strongly recommended that you keep several generations of
backups on disk in case of computer failure - so much work goes
into producing the transcription that you don't want to risk
losing any of it.

What I do is to have the piece in standard format on my hard
drive, save frequently while working (ctrl+s) then at the end of
a session do a "save as" onto disk in CSV format. The most you
are at risk of losing is the last session's work.

Hope this helps,

Bill.

Subject: [UK-CENSUS] Using XP

| I have finally obtained a Fiche reader\printer and am ready to
go.
| I experimented with the Excel format and as I have Win XP
installed I read the following message.
|
| Blank.CSV may contain features that may not be compatible with
CSV ( Comma delimited). Do you want to keep the workbook in this
format?
|
| 1. To keep this format, which leaves out any incompatible
features, click Yes.
|
| 2. To preserve the features, click No. then save the copy in
the latest Excel format.
|
| 3. To see what might be lost, click Help.
|
| Can you suggest where I go from here?
| Thanks,
| John.
