Subject: [UK-CENSUS] Occupation - Garthman
Hello All,
I have just come across someone whose occupation is described as 'farm
garthman'. The writing was quite clear, and not open to
misinterpretation. Has anyone come across this term before? It is a new
one to me.
According to my English Dictionary, a garth is a "courtyard surrounded
by a cloister", or, in archaic English, "a yard or garden". From that I
presume that a garthman would be a farm labourer who worked exclusively
around the farm buildings, rather than working in the fields.
Can anyone confirm, or offer an alternative?
John Ogle,
