I have now reached the end of enumerator district 2. He had to be the
worst writer and non-speller of his day. Of course, that was a cotton
mill area, and the folk who lived there would have been a fairly
hard-boiled lot. A gentle, softly-spoken, fully literate enumerator
wouldn't have lasted long before throwing a wobbly. Maybe Mr X was the
only man who could cope!

But, if nothing else, it increased my respect for the valiant transcriber
who managed to decipher nearly all of his scrawl and therefore gave me, as
the checker, a better chance to read a lot of otherwise indecipherable
garbage. There's a silver lining to every cloud!
