Family History News
No 36
18th December 2000
Hello everyone, and welcome to this weeks Family History News.
Sorry it is a day late but we have been spending a very pleasurable long
weekend with family and only got back today!!
Firstly a big thank you to everyone who responded to my query about the US
Consul in Cardiff, we now have quite a few avenues to explore, many of which
we had not thought of at all! We hope to be able to do some work on this
over the Christmas period!
There is quite a lot of news this week, including the news that Legacy
Family Tree will now be free, a new book from the FFHS and much more, much
of it in this news section, so please read carefully and I hope you enjoy!
Having mentioned last week about the Silver Edition of The Master
Genealogist I received this email from Trevor Rix at TWR this week:
The Silver Edition has always had these limitations. Many customers chose
the Silver instead of the Gold because they do not think the limitations are
that important, or not important enough to pay an extra £62 for the Gold
Edition. What is significant is that the new UK Silver Edition is less than
one third of the price of the US Silver Edition which we used to supply (and
is still on sale in the USA)
Which I think is a fair comment!!!
Also this week I received an email from Mark Howells notifying me of a
particular scam perpetuated by a company calling itself Mytrees.com. You may
have seen this already but if not here is what Mark has put out on other
mailing lists:
Some of you might remember a while back when a commercial outfit calling
itself "KindredKonnections" sent out unsolicited e-mail based on surname
interests hosted on GENUKI. Well, they seem to be at it again.
Although this time it was under the guise of their new name "MyTrees". I
received the same unbelievably accurately titled e-mail message about my
DEERE research interests in Glamorgan, Wales:
"Subject: DEERE from 1796 to 1900 in Penmark ,Wales"
This information was taken directly from the GENUKI "Genealogical Interest
List of Glamorgan, WALES " at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/Surnames/gla.htm
in spite of the clear warning on the main GENUKI web page:
"The information provided by GENUKI must not be used for commercial
purposes".
When I last received this very same e-mail from this outfit, I suspended my
disbelief just long enough to check to see if they, in fact, had any DEERE
listings from Penmark, Wales.
They did not.
If you receive such an unbelievably accurate e-mail, don't be surprised.
This outfit took your information off of a UK surname listing page where you
had previously submitted it.
Don't reward this type of online behaviour with either a visit or a
subscription. You'll simply be wasting your time.
Remember, once you trade your money, transcription time, or personal GEDCOM
for "research time" on this outfit's site, you won't be getting it back.
Incidentally Mark has also updated his excellent article on searching the
1881 Census Discs at http://www.oz.net/~markhow/writing/more.htm to
incorporate information on the LDS new Resource File Viewer. If you have
not been and read this article do so!!!
We received the following press release from the Millenia Corp. this week.
This is important news to family historians, and well worth reading!
Millennia Announces that Legacy Family Tree is Now Free
Duvall, WA - December 14, 2000 - Millennia Corporation today announced that
anyone can download Legacy Family Tree 3.0 for free from their website at
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com. This is the entire program. It is not a
demonstration version and nothing has been held back. (The previous retail
price of Legacy had been $49.95.)
Millennia, developers of powerful genealogy software, first released Legacy
over two and a half years ago. Since that time it has grown to be one of
the most popular programs on the market today.
"Today's announcement marks a big change in the distribution of the
product," said David Berdan, president of Millennia. "We expect a huge
increase in our user base in the near future. We also have plans for many
new products and features." A recent survey conducted by Ancestry.com,
Inc., found that family history research is important to nearly 65 percent
of everyday consumers. That is nearly two-thirds of all Americans.
"This is going to be really big," said Ken McGinnis, vice president of
Millennia. "Now everyone throughout the world will be able to use Legacy to
track their family history. Legacy's IntelliShare feature makes it really
easy to coordinate research and share information."Legacy Family Tree is one
of the leading family history programs available.
Some of the many features available in Legacy are: Easy data entry,
unlimited file size, To Do List and Correspondence Log, Web Page Creation,
IntelliMerge, powerful Report and Book generator, Source Citations, Multiple
Family Files in Split Screens, GEDCOM import and export, Spell Checking,
Search and Replace, and many, many more. Legacy version 3.0 requires the
following: A Pentium class computer with a minimum of 16 MB of memory (32 MB
or more recommended), 35 MB of hard disk space, Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me or
NT. Obviously, Internet access is required to obtain the program from the
website. A CD-ROM is also available for a nominal charge of $5.00 to cover
the cost of making the CD, shipping and handling.
Millennia Corporation is located in Duvall, Washington. The company strives
to provide top-quality genealogy software so people can record and track
their family history. For additional information on Millennia or the
products they offer visit their website at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com
I was alerted this week to a fantastic website resource for family
historians with an interest in South Yorkshire, and in particular the Dearne
Valley.Fitzmartyn Publishing is the name under which a collection of census
indexes, parish registers and local directories have been published for the
area, which are displayed on line - this website is well worth a visit as it
is nice and easy to use and understand.
You can purchase items via the website, which is an easy process and the
publisher will ship to anywhere in the world. There are also some web
resources on line which give easily negotiable indexes and transcripts of
Parish registers and other material for this area, but if you have plenty of
interests in this area why not buy the book from the publishers! Of course
if you buy the book the publisher will be able to produce more, so it is
well worth it in the end
All in all a fantastic web resource, so go and visit at www.fitzmartyn.co.uk
for the publisher or www.gleaden.plus.com for the transcripts The Federation
of Family History Societies have appointed their new administrator to
replace Pauline Saul. Her name is Mrs Maggie Loughran, who has previously
held appointments with Coventry FHS. This new appointment will start from
8th January 2001.

Webpage reviews
http://www.cumberlandroots.co.uk
Website containing information on the Holliday and Lawman family trees which
is very basic at the moment. The site however also contains a transcription
of the Holme Cultram Bishops Transcripts, Home Cultram being in Cumberland,
which will be useful to anyone researching in this area. Useful site which
is not the easiest to navigate but provides nevertheless a useful source of
records on line
http://home.cfl.rr.com/mirams/
Site of the one name study of the Mirams family , seemingly originating from
the Isle of Thanet in Kent, and moving worldwide, there is plenty of
information on this site including births and baptisms, quite a few family
trees and plenty of background information about the area and the families.
Unfortunately I feel the site suffers a little by it's design which can make
it a little cumbersome to use, and often a little bland when you reach the
actual content pages.
http://www.evetree.co.uk
Website dedicated to the Eve family worldwide, a fantastic amount of
information and records of marriages, births and deaths and background
information. The British information is very comprehensive and well worth a
visit if this name is in your tree. The website is fairly easy to navigate
and nicely laid out. This is really a fantastic resource for researchers of
the Eve surname worldwide, a one name study for public access. My main
quibble - they spell Caribbean wrong on their homepage!!
