Family History News
No 49

8th April 2001

Hi Everyone, and welcome to this weeks, 49th Family History news. I hope
there will be something for you in this weeks issue

New Books
Family History: A guide and troubleshooter, by Stella Colwell has recently
been published by Sutton publishing in their Sutton History Handbooks
series. Stella Colwell has been known as an author in the genealogy world
for some time, and has previously written quite a number of good titles for
beginners & intermediate level family historians. The ISBN of this title is
0 7509 1187 5, and the price 14.99 UKP

I have received news of three new CD’s from TWR computing
(http://www.twrcomputing.co.uk).

They are: Family Tree Maker Single CD version 8.0 £25
This much requested new product is one CD containing the latest version 8.0
of Family Tree Maker, and nothing else. The cheapest way to purchase the
latest version of the world's most popular family history program.

CD22 English Settlers in Barbados £24
This new CD in the Genealogy.com range contains details of baptisms,
marriages and wills of English Settlers in Barbados 1637-1800.CD364

American Source Records in England 1600s-1800s £29
This new CD from Genealogy.com contains the fully indexed images/pages of
twelve books including English will abstracts, church records and passenger
lists. I have attached an HTML file that provides a full description of this
CD. We have been pleasantly surprised by the quantity of early English
information on this CD.

Webpage reviews
http://www.onthe.net.au/cornell/index.htm
A fairly basic website dedicated to the Cornell family, originating from
Cambridgeshire. There are eight generations of family tree, nicely laid
outbut seemingly breaking the cardinal rule of not including persons
stillalive! I did like the layout though. The introduction gives a brief
outlineof the name and some details on the family - although not enough for
myliking. This website could do with some personality - some background,
someinteresting events. There is some of this in with the family tree pages
but I would like to have seen a couple of page outside the tree on where
people lived and what they did. The saving grace is really the layout of the
tree which is easy to navigate and read.

Gloucestershire Record Office Genealogy Database A great resource for anyone
with ancestors in Gloucestershire, this is a database of wills proved at
Gloucester between 1541 and 1858, the Gaol register of prisoners held at the
county gaol between 1815 and 1879 and baptisms at local nonconformist
churches. The results show basic details – names and dates but provide the
ability to apply to the record office for copies, or allows you to save a
lot of time at the record office itself by pinpointing which records to look
at. The search mechanism is easy to understand, easy to use and provides
quick results, I suspect a good amount of thought went into exactly how to
provide the search, and this pays off with it being easy to use. All in all
a great resource.

I suspect there are a lot of pages on the internet guiding people on how to
start their family history research, but this is the best one I have come
across. Written by Roy Stockdill, who will be well known to many mailing
list members, and also on the UK lecture circuit, the page is well written
and explains in simple language how to start your research in to British
family history. This is definitely a page to be recommended to anyone
starting out on their research
