Family History News
No 50
15th April 2001
Hello everyone, and welcome to the 50th issue of Family History News. I have
some big news this week, which I hope will be interesting to all our
subscribers.
Firstly I would like to thank everyone who has subscribed, or contributed to
Family History News over the last year and a bit. To be honest when I
started this up I never thought I would get to 50 issues, or indeed to 1600+
subscribers, it is probably 1500 more than I thought the newsletter would
get! Over the past year we have built up a reputation for unbiased news, and
for bringing snippets of information about UK genealogy to a wider audience,
which I am very pleased about. I must also thank everyone who has dropped me
a line of support, each week I get thank you emails and I read, and enjoy
every single one
and now the news! I will be away on one of my periodic works trips for the
next two weeks, so there will be no Family History News for two Sundays.
When it returns it will look slightly different. We have got together with
GENUKI, the worlds best website for UK Family History to make the newsletter
the GENUKI UK FAMILY HISTORY NEWS.
This holds many advantages for all of us! Firstly the main emphasis of the
newsletter will not change. We will still be aiming to bring news on UK
genealogy from everywhere, still unbiased as GENUKI is not commercially
driven and the style and content will not change. We will be though able to
bring more news, and hopefully more articles, with the help of GENUKI
Maintainers and others. We will still need all your regular contributions of
news and events though!
GENUKI will be hosting the archive of the newsletters from Number 51
onwards giving a full archive, rather than my very small archive on my
website, with good links and easy access to the main GENUKI site.
I am personally very pleased to announce this co-operation and feel this is
the best way to take the newsletter forward, and look forward to a bigger
and better next 50 issues (at least)
Some information form a press release from the Worcestershire Record Office:

2NP.
2. HQ branch will also be closed to the public after 12 April 2001 until
early Autumn in preparation to receive the contents of the St Helens branch,

New Books
Flicking through this months Family Tree Magazine I found a review of Air
Force Records for Family Historians by William Spence. This book, published
by the PRO, us available fro 9.99 UKP and would be extremely useful for
anyone interested in tracing ancestors who served in this branch of the
armed services.

Stoke Bruerne & Shutlanger Records This site contains records from the
baptisms, marriages and burials from the parish records as well as
information from the censuses between 1841 and 1891. A Very interesting
site, with an easy to use index and good information about the individuals
in it, with sources quoted. This could be very useful for anyone with
ancestors in this area, or who could have passed through, particularly in
the nineteenth century with the census records. On browsing I found a few
strays so it will be worth a look if your family came from this area of
Northamptonshire or close by as it may just have that vital information for
you
http://www.hmc.gov.uk/artists/
A searchable database of where to find records of ancestors who were
artists. Are you looking for the history or more information on a painter,
potter or photographer? This could well be the place to find it. The
database combines what is in many archives holding records pertaining to
these professions and makes it easily searchable, by name, by profession, by
date, and by location of archive. There are literally hundreds of archives
covered, and although it may only be a small chance of it being worthwhile
to a family historian a lot of the stored records are personal
correspondence. Only a small percentage of the artists & craftsmen covered
are famous so if your ancestor was in this filed it is well worth having a
search through - you might get lucky. The drawback to the site is the frames
and the rather unattractive design, but the site is functional and does not
take too long to learn how to use

This extremely long URL is the home of the family and local history section
of the Birmingham archives webpage. This site contains information on how to
use the archives in your family history research, including basic listings
of available records, and details of ways in which the archive can help you,
including workshops and seminars. A useful way to find out about the records
of the archive before you visit, or to see whether it is worth a visit
Upcoming Events
The Society of Genealogists Family History Fair is again being held at the
Royal Horticultural Society New Hall on 5th & 6th May. This is the biggest
family history fair in the UK, and well worth a visit, especially if you
have not been before. It is now too late to buy advance tickets if you have
not already done so. Tickets on the door though cost 6UKP. I will be there
on the Sunday, spending much of my time on, or around the GENUKI stand, so
if you are around come up and say hello!
The South West Group of Family History Societies are holding their Family
History Fair on Saturday 7th July from 10am to 4pm at The Winter Gardens in
Weston Super Mare. Exhibitors include most of the Family History Societies

and many more. Admission on the day is 1.50 UKP.

Scottish Ancestors. There are two dates for this 5th-30th June and 2nd
6th July. The course fee is 152 UKP and further details can be obtained from
