GENUKI Family History News
No 51

7th May 2001

Hello everyone and welcome to the 51st Family History News, and the first in
association with GENUKI

Quite a long newsletter this week, with lots to catch up on and the usual
burst of new information after the family history fair!

I spent yesterday (Sunday) at the Society of Genealogists Family History
Fair in London. A very busy day with lots of useful information gathered. I
have picked up lots of new books to review, and over the next few weeks will
be reviewing them for you

The Local Studies Library and Archives, Central Library, Bromley, will be
closed for reorganisation Tuesday 8 May to Saturday 12 May inclusive, it
will reopen on Monday 14th May

New Books & CD’s
Military Courts 1879-1994, by Stuart Tamblin
An index to the Military Courts covering Royal Navy 1911-1965, Royal Air
Force 1941-1994, British Army 1879-1986 and Soldiers Executed 1914-1920.
This is a CD in PDF format which includes the Adobe Acrobat Reader if you do
not already have this software. Easy to understand and use it contains many
entries. The entries give the branch of service, name and date, with some
further details, the references are given to enable further searching in the
Public Record Office. There is no search mechanism but you are able to use
the Control F find function to quickly look for names or dates. This CD is
priced at 7.99 UKP in the UK and is also available in microfiche format.
This should be available from all good genealogical suppliers, and for
further information you can visit the publishers website at
www.fhindexes.co.uk

London Record Offices, Libraries and Repositories, Map and Guide, by Audrey
Collins
A simple fold out map of Central London showing the position of repositories
and libraries. Phone numbers and addresses are also given for each place
shown. A very simple map, but I think a very good idea, if you are new to
London, or are unaware of where libraries are you will find this very
useful. It is available form most genealogical shops in London, priced at 1
UKP. For further information you can contact the author on

Basic Facts about Research in London: Part 1 Researching London Ancestors,
by Lilian Gibbens. Published by the Federation of Family History Societies
as part of their Basic Facts series. I found this a little disappointing in
substance. Unfortunately researching in London is very complicated and the
subject could possibly be better served by a larger introductory book rather
than a rather flimsy ‘Part 1’. Some of the titles in this series are
excellent but I am afraid I did not find this one so! However there are a
few useful references and pointers, and real beginners to London research
may find these useful. Be warned though you will soon need an expanded book.
This book is priced at 1.50 UKP and should be available form genealogical
suppliers, or your local family history society. You can visit the
publishers website at www.familyhistorybooks.co.uk

One book I was pleased to see at the Fair was the 2001 edition of the
Genealogical Research Directory (GRD for short). This really has become a
bit of an institution. Published by the authors, Keith A Johnson and Malcolm
R Sainty, it comprises several parts. The main part of the directory is a
list of thousands of research interests from all around the world, this is
not just useful in the UK as many of the entries come from the US or
Australia. Each entry is arranged alphabetically and it is easy to cross
reference this to a contact name and address. A more recent addition is the
inclusion of email addresses which makes contact even easier. Another very
useful part of the directory is a list of repositories and family history
societies worldwide with addresses and contact details, it becomes a very
useful reference book even after you have exhausted all the research
interests. The book weighs in at a hefty 1120 pages and is available in both
hardback and paperback. The price of the paperback in the UK is 15.20 UKP.
This is one book that should be available from your usual genealogical
supplier, but if you have difficulty locating a copy, you can contact the
publishers at

Webpage reviews
http://www.geocities.com/cromerhistory/page1.html
Site devoted to the people and families of Cromer. There is some information
about the history of Cromer in Norfolk and its seafaring links. There is an
index of names associated with the area and some information about some of
the better known families. The site suffers a little from overdesign and the
frame system makes the pages slow to load and a little difficult to navigate
but the information in the site is interesting nevertheless

New on Genfair
Genfair is an online family history fair where you will find a good many
family history societies and other organisations showing their bookstalls.
You can also find information about these societies.

The following have recently opened stands on Genfair:
Lincolnshire Family History Society Lincolnshire FHS have now joined GENfair
and offer a wide range of publications as befits a large and active
Society - Census Indexes, a wealth of Marriage indexes, in both book and
microfiche formats; burial records (including cemeteries) and monumental
inscriptions on fiche and a good range of Poor Law and other miscellaneous
records

West Middlesex Family History Society join Genfair with a stand full of
useful and interesting publications from their area. Their 1851 Census
indexes on microfiches cover areas such as Kensington, Chelsea, Brompton,
Hammersmith and Fulham and many others out to Shepperton, Staines and
Uxbridge.

New items on existing stalls:

The National Burial Index is now available for immediate dispatch direct
from GENfair. Published by FFHS Publications, it has been produced by
hundreds of volunteers as part of the Federation of Family History Society's
NBI Project. It is an index of burials on CD-ROM taken from parish,
non-conformist, Roman Catholic and cemetery registers and includes entries
from England and Wales dating from the 16th century to modern times,
although not all locations and dates will be covered to start with. This
first edition contains more than 5.3 million names from the 37 counties
listed on the new GENfair Direct stand

Succeeding in Family History is the title of a new book by well-known family
history writer, John Titford. Published today (5th May) by Countryside
Books, it's already available direct from stock at the GENfairDirect stand.

Cornish Forefathers have added the Baptism Registers of the parishes of St
Giles in the Heath and St Gluvias to their series of parish registers on 3.5
inch diskette.

Stuart Tamblin has added seven new microfiches to his Criminal Register
Indexes for the period 1805-1892. These are Supplements each covering the
whole of England and Wales for a particular type of crime or sentence –
Death sentences, Transportation, Highway Robbery, Killing, Monetary crime,
Sexual crime and Unrest.

Parish Anthologies Pembrey and Llanelli are the titles of two new CDs from
Carmarthenshire FHS

Sheffield FHS have another double fiche set of burial indexes. Rotherham All
Saints 1813-1854 and Greasbrough St Mary 1813-1858 are included on the same
microfiche. The Society is also selling the National Burial Index on CD.

East Surrey FHS have published an 1871 Census Index on fiche for the
sub-district of St James, Bermondsey (replacing the booklet version) and a
new 1891 Census Index for Kingston sub-district which includes the parishes
of Kingston, Kingston Vale, Norbiton, Coombe, Malden, New Malden, Surbiton
and Hook
