20 May 2001
Hi Everyone and welcome to this weeks edition of GENUKI FAMILYHISTORYNEWS.
I was very pleased today to notice we have gone past 2000 subscribers. We
have been gradually increasing over the last year and a bit and it is very
pleasing to reach another landmark. Thank you all for subscribing!
There is the usual mix of website and book reviews this week, and a little
news. Please do remember though that we often rely on your information on
news and events so if you here of anything that relates to UK Family History
please drop me an email: this is often the
way that many people here of events, or record office moves and closures
amongst other things so keep the news rolling in!! (and a big thank you to
those who already keep me informed some with weekly updates!!)
New Books & CDs
Succeeding in Family History: Helpful hints and time saving tips, by John
Titford, published by Countryside books, ISBN 1-85306-691-5, price 6.95 UKP
As was made very aware to me at the recent SoG Family History Fair there are
more and more books being published on family history, meaning that you have
to pick very carefully the books you buy in order not to annoy your bank
manager. There are few books that are absolutely vital to own. This book
would not fall into my vital to own category but would nevertheless be a
recommended read to most people. The author has a wealth of information to
pass over, saving you time and money, and no doubt opening up a few of those
dead ends in the process. Written in an amusing way, the book is enjoyable
to read, not at all dry like many family history books can be. Whilst
probably not necessarily for the beginner this book could be a great help to
those researchers getting past the first stage of their enthusiasm for the
subject, and being prepared to dig deeper for there results. It offers hints
on difficulties with names, civil registration, and the census and will
enlighten most people to a new avenue to try. The books will be available
from most genealogical booksellers, and also from the Federation of Family
History Societies at www.familyhistorybooks.co.uk
We have heard a lot recently about the National Burial Index, from the
Federation of Family History Societies, but this week I have actually
managed to have a play with this wonderful toy (sorry tool!!) I found this
CD an absolute delight to use, and never have I so quickly reopened a dead
end in my research! The Interface is remarkably simple, this has definitely
been designed for computer novices, which helps everyone. OK the coverage of
each county varies enormously, but hopefully over time this will change.
Also it must be said that this does not detract form this first edition of
the Index, it is still an unbelievable bonus to have this amount of records
on CD, on your home PC. I am very glad the Federation has gone along this
route, and shown the way into the future of family history research. It was
a very ambitious project and has succeeded in my eyes. One particular bonus
I found was that you can see records on a map of the UK, and a simple click
on another dot on the map will take you to that particular record. Id be
very surprised if everyone involved in English or Welsh family history
research would not find this useful. You can find out more about the
National Burial Index at www.familyhistorybooks.co.uk , but be warned, the
demand for this CD has been phenomenal, and there will be a delay now whilst
the FFHS catches up with demand, worth the wait though!!
Webpage reviews
http://www.btinternet.com/~johnandsandy.colby/measures/index.html
This site will not help you in your genealogical research in any way, however
for those of us with an interest to dig below the surface and know more of
the lives our ancestors led this will be fascinating. This simple set of web
pages will tell you all about weights, measures and coinage and what it
compares to in todays terms. There is a set of vintners and brewers terms as
well. I found this site absolutely fascinating, although I was a little
irritated by the frames and occasional bursts of retina burning colour, all
in all though good fun
http://www.goireland.com/genealogy/goireland.htm
A great resource for people with Irish ancestry this website is provided by
the national tourist board. There are a couple of searchable databases to do
with basic name history and distribution, although I had little luck with my
own, and my family is definitely Irish. The great part of this site though
is the information and tips for researching in Ireland, together with the
links to the Irish Family History Foundation centres in the county of your
ancestors, you can find out lots about when to visit and how to get the best
out of any visit - the pages for each centre also give a brief list of their
holdings
http://www.isle-of-man.com/interests/genealogy/index.shtml
A resource site for those researching ancestors that did, or might have,
come from the Isle of Man. A comprehensive resource with information on how
to research Manx ancestors, what sources to consult and where to find them,
and a map of the parishes of the Isle of Man. There is also a 'members
interests' of sorts where researchers submit their research lines. The site
also contains a variety of family trees which are worth a look through. I
did not like to format of the trees on the website much, but they can be
downloaded to use in your own genealogical software which may be easier.
Overall a good site, quite easy to find your way around, not very attractive
on the eye, but this is overcome by the content.
New on Genfair
New items on Genfair (http://www.genfair.co.uk) this week include the
