GENUKI Family History News
No 54
3rd June 2001
Hello everyone
Hope by now you will all have received issues 51-53, as someone so
delightfully put it The Gremlins were having a party!
Here is an update on the Devon Freecen project, recently sent to the Devon-L
list by Brian Randell:
I thought it was about time I issued a further progress report on this
project, though in fact full details can always be found at:
http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/DEV/censusproject.html
In summary, almost 50% (64 to be exact) of the 130 sets of fiche have now
been transcribed. Of these 15 sets have since been checked, and of these 6
sets have gone through the final validation stage. Transcription, checking
and validation each involve use of a specially-designed software package,
developed either by or under the direction of John Lerwill, the overall
FreeCEN Coordinator. Much of the detailed coordination of the Devon project
is carried out by our three regional coordinators, Lesley Dawson, Bob
Muchamore, Dennis Radford and their helpers. Given that virtually all the
Devon fiche are already either being transcribed or are awaiting independent
post-transcription checking, the principal need for further volunteer help
in order to complete the 1891 Devon project now concerns checking - this
stage ideally is carried out by volunteers with previous transcription
experience, or at least much experience in dealing with 19th century UK
census records and the handwriting used at that time.***More such volunteers
will have a dramatic effect on the speed with which the Devon project is
completed.
***The FreeCEN database that will enable an online search facility to be
provided is now being actively designed by John Lerwill. (Once this is
complete, the present small set of interim sample transcriptions provided in
GENUKI/Devon will be withdrawn in favour of being made available via the
search facility.) As was originally planned, the Devon pilot project has
indeed led to a growth of companion projects under the overall FreeCEN
umbrella, so far including Bedfordshire, Cornwall, Durham, Surrey,
Warwickshire and Worcestershire - with a number more coming on stream very
shortly. Further details of FreeCEN, its software, and the projects being
carried out under it, are to be found at: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/
The Dyfed FHS website at: http://www.westwales.co.uk/dfhs/dfhs.htm
has been updated as follows. Changes following the Society AGM, in February,
include new officers and the facility to pay for Society subscriptions and
publications by creditor debit card. Another 100+ images of churches and
chapels. Additional indexes to Society transcriptions for Cardiganshire. A
small scale map, showing the OS reference grid, can be accessed from the
parishes list. Additional descriptions of towns to complete existing pages
except for much-needed photographs. The Research Assistance Programme has
been completely revised with a new form and help list. Next planned release
in August will include more photographs, updated members' research interests
and marriage index, additional transcription indexes and larger scale old OS
maps to locate farms, churches and chapels.
New Books & CDs
1898 Bartholomews Atlas On CD in two parts. The first CD contains the
statistics (Population, Climate, Geology, and much more) and the large scale
maps which are pretty but not overly helpful to the genealogist. This CD
seemed to me to be a little slow to load, but well produced when it arrived.
The second CD contains the street maps of major towns and cities (and some
more obscure like Devonport) This was much quicker to load and can
usefully be zoomed up to the point of reading street names. It does take a
while to load when you zoom in but you would expect that. All in all a
useful little CD especially if you cannot get hold of a copy of the
original atlas. Still I would personally prefer maps on paper, but they are
not always so easy to get hold of! This CD was on sale at the Family History
Fair at a price of 17.45 UKP but you can find out more from the publishers
of this CD at www.genealogy.demon.co.uk
Lancashire Graveyards and Burial Grounds: Location, and whereabouts of
transcribed monumental inscriptions, by W J Taylor. Published by Lancashire
Family History & Heraldry Society, ISBN 1-870277-03-1. A simple, yet
effective A-Z of Lancashire Burial grounds, showing whether they have had
monumental inscriptions transcribed, and where you can find them. There is
also a grid reference of the graveyard. A very useful guide to whether you
can find monumental inscriptions or not, and of course a lot of the
transcriptions are also available at larger genealogical repositories.
The Genealogical Services Directory: Family and Local History Handbook, 5th
edition, published by The Genealogical Services Directory, ISBN
0-9530297-4-3, priced at 6.99 UKP. I have mentioned this book before but
recently picked up a copy. I was very impressed by the much improved
layout making information easy to find. There are also heaps of articles
which are interesting to read, making this guide very much more than just
information. Addresses of Family History Societies, Libraries, repositories
and record offices are all in this guide as well as many more addresses of
useful places and people. A vital guide to resources which will save most
people from looking through many sources for information. The price is very
reasonable as well considering the large amount of data contained, and if
you have never bought one before now is probably the time.
Identifying your World War I Soldiers from Badges and Photographs, by Iain
Swinnerton with illustrations by Roland Symons. Published by the Federation
of Family History Societies, to add to a collection of Military Books that
they publish, quite a few of them by Iain Swinnerton. I found this book
informative and interesting. It contains mainly a collection of
illustrations of military badges and medals, from campaign medals to
occupational and regimental badges. I am no Military expert and therefore
cannot vouch at all for the accuracy but I do have confidence in the author
and publisher to get it right. Each chapter contains a different type of
medal and is accompanied by a short description. This could be a very useful
book in identifying photographs, I do wonder a little how much use a single
family history researcher will find in the book, but I do think it will be a
useful reference title. The title costs 6.50 UKP and should be available on
most bookstalls and in any shop specialising in Family History.
Webpage reviews
http://www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/leisure/countryside/bro/sources.htm
Website containing details of what is available for family historians at the
Berkshire Record Office. Simple site, nothing flashy, but extremely useful
information about what to expect and what you could find when you visit.
Contains useful information to read before you visit the record office
http://www.kent.gov.uk/e%26l/artslib/archives/acollfamily.html
Homepage of the Centre for Kentish Studies, with details of the collections
and what to expect to find at this archive. The website is a little over
designed which makes it a little uncomfortable on the eye, but the
information contained is ok, and could be helpful in planning a visit to the
centre
http://www.societe.org.gg/sections/familyhistorysec.htm
A rather disappointingly bare website of La Société Guernesiaise. The site
contains a bit of useful information and good background to the Society and
how it can help you with tracing Guernsey ancestors. Includes details of
meetings and publications. The choice of colours would not be helpful to
anyone with poor vision as the font and background tend to blur but if you
have ancestors in Guernsey this will be worth visiting if only for the links
