GENUKI Family History News
No 56
17th June 2001
Hello everyone and welcome to this 56th GENUKI Family History News.
In the last issue I reviewed the PROs Census index on line. In the
interests of fairness I feel it is necessary to reproduce this answer I
received in full from Gill Blanchard:
Dear Rob,
I feel I have to respond to your review of the 1891 Norfolk census pilot.
Whilst I agree it is a fantastic facility, there are some major problems you
haven't mentioned. First, is the fact it will be only available until the
end of July with no guarantees of it ever appearing again. If we want it to
continue we must keep lobbying the PRO.Secondly, re payment to view, this
involves a minimum payment of £5. whilst I don't have a problem with this,
the credit has to be used within 24 hours. This is not always possible, as
you may only want to look up one person at that time, meaning you pay £5 to
see one entry. Possibly the most important problem is the fact the free
index does not include folio and piece numbers. Whilst people outside
Norfolk would probably pay to view the return anyway, and it is also not a
problem when searching the census returns for a small parish. It is however,
a major problem for large places such as Norwich (over 30 parishes),
Yarmouth etc.For those of us who live in Norfolk or want to look up the
returns at the FRC it means we must pay to view to get the necessary
information to do so. This means it is not free. I also have to say that I
have tried it out fairly extensively and have come across several entries on
the free index which do not include the name of the parish of residence, so
again it is necessary to pay to view to get this information. Lastly, the
payment facilities are not on a secure system.
In response I can only say I did think the facility was superb, and I stand
by my comments, whilst appreciating all of Gills. I think in essence the
argument boils down to the fact that unfortunately local people and those
with easy access to the FRC have been dealt a bad hand with this, whilst
those researching from further afield have been given better access than
otherwise possible. I would however be interested to hear other comments on
this system, positive or otherwise.
A couple of weeks ago someone asked me how to find which day of the week a
particular date was. There is a piece of software which is easy to use that
can make these sort of calculations for you. It is called The British Date
Calculator and is provided by Drake Software. It should be available in most
large genealogical suppliers. You can find out more about this software at :

New Books & CDs
Family History on the Web: An Internet Directory for England and Wales, by
Stuart A Raymond I am never 100% sure of books which list internet
resources the nature of the internet is that there are constant changes
and there are good links websites on line (both GENUKI and Cyndis List
(www.cyndislist.com) but it is hard to be scathing about a book which is
obviously well researched. It is an easily browsable book that will help
beginners navigate the wide world of the web and contains exhaustive lists
of useful sites for UK researchers. Therefore I would recommend the book as
a computerside companion where you might just find a useful lead. I
believe there are plans to update the book each year, if this is not done it
will soon become old information. This title costs 4.95 UKP and will be
available from most genealogy suppliers/bookstalls. You can find out further
information on this and the previous title from the publisher at
www.familyhistorybooks.co.uk
I have mentioned the Gloucestershire 1851 census index on CD in a previous
newsletter, it being a great resource for family historians with
Gloucestershire Roots. I have recently been given contact details to
purchase this, and here they are: Obtainable from me: Dr. H. A. Kearsey,
Windmill Place, Windmill Road, Minchinhampton, STROUD, GL6 9EE at £21.50
including post and packing. Purchase can also be made using credit card.
Webpage reviews
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/data.htm
A website with information about the isle of Islay in Scotland, its history
and it's families. It's a bit of a mish-mash of a site, with many of the
navigations not working and leading to page errors, but the site contains a
good deal of records that are worth persevering for, including census,
cemetery and parish registers. These have been transcribed in a variety of
ways and some of them take a little while to download. I have my problems
with this site, mainly in the design and navigation of it, but the content
is very good
www.virtualbrum.co.uk which I reviewed many months ago, has now been vastly
updated with over 1100 photographs of Birmingham and a new Genealogy Forum
http://www.mcpitz.com/
A site dedicated to Scottish Mining, with information on mines, areas,
housing, conditions, disasters and lots more besides. This is a nicely
designed site, although unfortunately using frames which detracts from the
nice look of the site. The information on many of the pages is sketchy, but
often extremely useful and very interesting, especially if your ancestors
were miners in Scotland. I suspect you might also find this site interesting
if your ancestors were miners in England or Wales. There is limited
genealogical content, although there is a page of submitted interests which
is worth a browse. Overall an interesting site that could do with a little
development but otherwise good
