GENUKI Family History News
No 57

24th June 2001

Hi Everyone, and welcome to this 57th GENUKI Family History News

I received the following message from Stuart Raymond this week, which
deserves wider circulating:

I am in the process of compiling a directory of 'Irish Family History on the
Web', as a companion volume for my 'Family History on the Web: a directory
for England & Wales' (which is now in its 3rd printing!) The web, as we all
know, can be a valuable resource for genealogists, but it can also be very
frustrating, with very poor search engines throwing up thousands of
irrelevant references, badly designed gateways, and sometimes great
difficulty in finding the particular site required. I hope that my directory
will enable users to go directly to the sites they need. I have trawled
through numerous gateways and link pages to identify all of the major and
many of the less important sites; however, it is likely that you and your
readers will know of sites that I may have missed - particularly those that
are not listed on any search engine or gateway. I would be grateful for any
information on such sites, bearing in mind that I will not be listing sites
devoted to specific families/surnames. And if anyone would like a copy when
the book is published, let me know that too.

You can contact Stuart at:

Webpage reviews
http://www.adrh96.ukgateway.net/village.htm
A great little website run by the Alderbury and Whaddon Local History
research Group. The site contains lots and lots of interesting information
about these villages (near Salisbury) and their history, including quite a
few pictures, which are small enough to load successfully. There are also
details of current projects and the groups publications

rvices/Ec3.html
A Simple, yet effective guide to the collections of the Conwy Archives
service. There is little else on this site other than a list of records, but
it is quick and easy to find whether what you are looking for is there. The
site is simple to navigate and clear and easy on the eye, so you can find
the necessary information without too much searching.

http://www.sutcomberecords.co.uk/
A Site dedicated to Sutcombe in North Devon. A really fantastic site, with
records ranging from Monumental Inscriptions, Trade Directories, Tithe
Records and lots more besides. Although on the negative side the site had a
few large graphics that were a bit tedious to open, the information was good
and valid stuff for local and family historians alike. In fact for anyone
interested in Devon villages, or rural life in previous centuries the site
will be very interesting. Even if your ancestors came from a different part
of the south west you might find the site an interesting insight into their
lives, even if no genealogical worth. Overall a fantastic site.

New on Genfair
Powys FHS have a couple of new booklets on their stand at GENfair: Firstly a

the Brighton area covering Hove, Preston, Patcham, West Blatchington,
Hangleton, Portslade, Aldrington, Southwick, Old Shoreham. Finally they have

Upcoming Events
The SoG in London is holding a talk on Internet for Genealogy on June 30th.

Next weekend (1st July) sees the Hillingdon FHS Family History Fair which I
mentioned in issue 56

July 7th sees the return of the ever popular South West Family History Fair
in Weston Super Mare. At this time I do not have a venue or opening times
for this, so if anyone can help me on this I will put out a message again
next week. The event though is usually a big one with plenty of exhibitors,
including all the major Societies of the area and all the major commercial
companies involved in Family History

You can find a listing of upcoming events, and links to respective websites
on the GENEVA site (part of GENUKI) at

And finally…
Well, that’s it for this week, hope there was something of use to you in
this issue

If you have sent me an email in the last couple of weeks and have not yet
had a response, please be patient. I try as hard as possible to reply to all
my emails but we have the builders in at present, which has meant great
upheaval in the house, and less time to get on my machine. But please do
keep sending in suggestions, news and any other information you think would
be interested to us all

Have a good week

Rob
