GENUKI Family History News
No 59
8 July 2001
Hi Everyone, and welcome to this 59th GENUKI Family History News
I have mentioned in a previous newsletter the excellent Gloucestershire
Record Office website. They have now added an online catalogue database to
their already substantial site. This can be found at
http://archives.gloscc.gov.uk
I have also already mentioned the EXCITING GENEALOGY website previously, and
discussed a date finding program. Well thy have added to their site since my
review a free downloadable DOS program which will achieve this function for
you finding the days for past dates. Their website can be found at
www.exciting.fsnet.co.uk/genealogy
I was sad to see in a recent announcement that Brenda Smith has decided to
give up her administrative work for the Federation of Family History
Societies. Brenda has always been a wonderfully welcoming face for me,
whenever I attended events she was always there! And I owe her a big favour
for finding my wife and I the best restaurant in Cheshire! I personally
would like to wish Brenda well for the future, and hope we will still see
her around!
In the same email it was announced that Audrey Collins has been co-opted on
the Federations executive in place of David Holman who has had to resign for
work reasons
NEW BOOKS
Irish Ancestry: A Beginners Guide
3rd Edition
Bill Davis
Published by the Federation of Family History Societies
ISBN: 1 86006 133 8, 166 pages
Price: £6.95
Third edition of this book, previously titled; An Introduction to Irish
Research. This is a comprehensive and well written introduction to Irish
Research, which is useful for many family historians. The book covers all
the essentials for Irish research, including the many ways in which
research in this area is different from UK research, such as Townland
indexes and Griffiths valuations which are unique to Ireland.. An invaluable
book really, and well worth having the latest edition.
Londoners Occupations: A Genealogical Guide
2nd Edition
Stuart Raymond
Published by the Federation of Family History Societies
ISBN: 1 86006 129 X, 72 pages
Price: £5.50
A List of sources published to aid you in your search for a particular
occupation, this title has been thoroughly revised for this second edition.
The lists sources alphabetically by profession so is easy to use, and has a
good name and place index.
WEBSITE REVIEWS
http://www.lightinfantry.org/
A website revolving around histories and details of the British Light
Infantry Regiments, offering details of battle honours, commanding officers,
honours, and many other historical details, including a sketchy list of
persons killed in each regiment in WW1. This obviously relies on submissions
and is far from complete, as is much of the information on the site. However
the site is definitely very interesting and could well develop into a super
little resource
http://genea-logos.bizhosting.com/wisbech/
A very interesting site, based on the genealogy of Wisbech, and the
surrounding areas. There is an incomplete marriage index, and a general
Wisbech index of names, as well as geographical and historical information
about the area. The marriage index is about 15 percent of the marriages at
present but seems to be growing. The general index is full of names and
seemingly very good records. However my gripe with the site would very much
be that although it is reasonably easy to navigate it is not always
perfectly obvious how to proceed. Also there are an above average number of
pop up screens and advertisements making it a bit gaudy on the eye. However
a useful site if you have interests in this area
http://www.netcentral.co.uk/steveb/maps/index.htm
A really nicely put together site, with minimal effort needed to find what
you want, this site has a collection of 65 maps of Stoke on Trent and the
Potteries, from early eighteenth century to the present. A great resource,
and OK yes the maps take a little while to download, but are quicker than
many other images of comparable size. The maps range from maps of the
general area, to individual work, and cemetery plots to street maps. Well
well worth a look
