GENUKI Family History News
No 62
30 July 2001
Hello, and welcome to this weeks issue of GENUKI Family History News
AT the end of last week I was fortunate enough to visit the SoG in London,
for the first time since its refurbishment. It is looking very different
from when I worked there! The building is looking much smarter, the library
layout is much more user friendly, with a bank of computers and fiches
readers downstairs in a pleasant environment. The shelving in the middle and
upper libraries has been replaced with much more flexible metal shelving
which will help with space. The bookshop is much improved, and the reception
area seems much more user friendly. As Else Churchill, the Genealogy Officer
pointed out to me there are still improvements to be made, mainly in signage
and the lift being made to work, but overall I think they are to be
congratulated in making the best use of the current space. The main aim must
have been to make the building more user friendly, and they have achieved
this well. There is even air conditioning on two floors, which in our
current heat wave must be most appreciated!
Archives in Focus (http://www.hmc.gov.uk/focus), a new website
of the Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC) has recently been
launched. Archives in Focus aims to provide an accessible introduction to
archives in the UK for those with no previous experience of using them. The
site includes a section on family history research, which looks at commonly
used sources, explains how resources at HMC can be used and provides links
to
other sites and a bibliography of published sources. There is also a
Noticeboard section which includes details of family history conferences and
other events, and of courses and other events of relevance to family
historians.
HMC would be pleased to receive comments on the site and
details of any events being held which we could publicise in the Noticeboard
section. Please e-mail us: , or write: Historical
Manuscripts
Commission, Quality House, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1HP.

Continuing the recent feature this weeks unwanted certificate is the birth
certificate of William, son of William HARRIS (labourer) and Mary WOODWARD,
born 11 August 1846, in the Finchley District of Barnet, in the County of
Middlesex, in England.
If this is of use to you in your own personal research, drop me a line at
and I will put you in touch with the
current holder
Meanwhile, if you have a certificate you dont need that may be of use to
someone else then drop me a line, and we will advertise it in an upcoming
newsletter.
Webpage reviews

The website of St Combs in Aberdeenshire. This website contains a fairly
useful selection of information, including census transcriptions from
1841-1891 and a history of the village and its development. There is quite a
lot of background information on the site, so if your ancestors came from
this vicinity you will be able to find out lots about their life and
families. You will however, have to put up with a fairly gaudy colour scheme
and a few flashy graphics that serve little purpose other than to slow down
the download.
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Workshop/2299/pilots.html
Was your ancestor a Pilot? This is a statement that nowadays could be
misconstrued, but this website deals with the earlier pilots - those that
guided ships into a harbour. This particular website is a listing of
Aberdeen Pilots 1854-1910. They are transcribed, by year, from sources in
the
Guildhall Library in London. The website is nice and simple to use, although
the yellow background can affect your eyes after a little while. It is a
shame there is no name index, but a little bit of searching may just get
what you were looking for
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/directories/cambridge/main.htm
Whilst having a browse around I found this database on the Ancestry.com site
- it is a searchable database of Cambridge University Alumni from 1291 to
1900, with biographical detail when it is possible. This could be a very
useful database, and is very easy to use.
