GENUKI Family History News
No 68
17th September 2001
Hello Everyone and welcome to this 68th GENUKI Family History News.
A new family history society based around UK genealogy has started, covering
many counties. It is called Ashforth Society for Genealogy and you can find
out more at
http://www.ashgen.cjb.net
Further to last weeks tragic events in New York Rootsweb circulated this
message, which I want to reproduce in full:
Because of the catastrophe that happened in the United States Tuesday,
11 Sept., 2001, MyFamily.com (RootsWeb.com and Ancestry.com) has
created a special Message Board for those who wish to express or share
condolences, sorrow, prayers, and thoughts for the victims, their
families and friends.
However, this is not a board for discussion on how the U.S. should
resolve this issue or about how the search for those responsible is
going.
The URL for the board is

"The Members of the University of Oxford 1500-1714. Their parentage,
birthplace and year of birth, with a record of their degrees. Being the
Matriculation Register of the University. Alphabetically arranged,
revised
and annotated by Joseph Foster."
This is one of the most important sources of family history information
in
Britain, and which is a rare series of volumes normally only found in
major
libraries. To own a copy of one's own is virtually impossible. Until now
that is. (A copy of the books was published in 1999 with a retail price
of
£750.00, so we won't count those!)
See the on-line catalogue for more details and ordering
They can be found in the section for All England / College &
Ecclesiastical
Members of Parliament 1213-1874
-------------------------------
In the years 1876 and 1877, two orders were passed in the House of
Commons,
that a Return should be made of the names of every Member of Parliament
of
England [and Wales], Scotland and Ireland "from so remote a Period as
can be
obtained" up to the present day. This was duly carried out, and an
official
government publication was printed in two volumes in 1878.
Here we have those two volumes, which describe, for each year's
Parliament,
in county order, the names of those members, the date of the return, and
the
county, city, borough or place served. Each of these huge volumes
contains
over 600 pages of small print in two columns.
Part 1: Parliaments of England 1213-1702
Part 2: Parliaments of Great Britain 1707-1796
Parliaments of The United Kingdom 1801-1874
Parliaments and Conventions of the Estates of Scotland 1357-1707
Parliaments of Ireland 1559-1800.
See the on-line catalogue for more details and ordering

Webpage reviews
http://www.iprom.co.uk/archives/
A great little site, with lots of story and archives from the Highlands of
Scotland. I am not a fan of the layout, some of the fonts are too large
meaning the homepage can be difficult to read, but it is definitely worth a
browse if you have family from the Highlands. There are plenty of stories of
highlands life so you can get a good background, and also plenty of military
interest including rolls of honour

Do you have Welsh ancestors but no understanding of the Welsh language? Then
this site could be really helpful to you. It is a site that lists common
words and phrases used on Monumental Inscriptions in Welsh, with their
English transcription, basic and simple but nevertheless incredibly useful
to non Welsh speakers
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donaghmore1/
A site for people with ancestors in Newry, Donaghmore, Loughbrickland, &
Banbridge in Ireland. This site contains information in varied forms, from
Townland lists to personal memories on many parishes in this area. The site
utilises frames, which i personally do not like, and is a little slow and
cumbersome. It is however a useful site and contains much information on the
area

Although this third stage course continues the Society's rolling programme
of evening classes for advanced level students, attendance at previous
courses is not a requirement. The course will present opportunities to look
at the application of genealogical techniques to other disciplines and to
assess the history and development of the subject.
The tutors will concentrate on earlier records for the period before parish
registers and will include the examination of land records, manorial
holdings along with taxation records. The records of the ecclesiastical
courts, chancery and other equity courts will also be examined. The
language and use of heraldry as a genealogical source will be explored.
Lastly, students will be introduced to the records of immigration,
emigration and researching abroad.
This course has a distinct practical element. Students can take part in a
research project which will introduce them to lesser used repositories.
They are expected to join in practical workshops in the classroom as well
as undertake assignments. This course is suitable for students wishing to
take the IHGS examinations.
We hope that this course will stretch students of all abilities and, above
all, will be an entertaining and enjoyable experience.
