New Books & CDs
I found what seems like three reasonably new books on the SoG Bookshop
Website this week.
The Local Historian's Glossary of Words & Terms
by Joy Bristow
This is the third edition of this book, which was always recommended as an
absolute boon to researchers, containing lots of useful words and phrases
that a researcher might need translating and or explaining. Published by
Countryside Books this book costs 9.95UKP
The Society appears to have published a new title in their National Index of
Parish Registers series, the new one I saw was Vol 8, Pt 6, Hampshire & the
Isle of Wight, Compiled by Alan McGowan. This is a guide to Anglican, Roman
Catholic and Non-Conformist Registers held in record repositories, libraries
and societies. The volume also contains information on Bishop's Transcripts,
modern copies and marriage licences, plus extensive background notes on a
wide variety of record types. The price of this is 13 UKP
The Society has also published a new title in its London Apprentices
series. The latest volume is Volume 35 - Cuttlers' Company 1142-1448,
1565-1800, abstracted and indexed by Cliff Webb. This is also priced at
13UKP.

Webpage reviews
http://www.data-wales.co.uk/index.htm
A site which will be incredibly interesting to those with Welsh ancestors,
this attractively designed and easy to use website contains much data and
information on Wales from a variety of sources. Containing data both on
Wales today and Wales past there is an incredibly varied range of
information. There is plenty of information on family Welsh families, and on
Welsh surnames which is often a difficult subject to understand. There are
also plenty of pictures, mainly though of Wales today. Other information on
the site covers Welsh culture and history, all in all a fascinating site
http://thenortheast.com/northlib/default.asp
A rare website for the uncanny reason that this is a website that
concentrates mainly on images, and even on the slowest PC I use was quick to
load, although it has obviously been professionally done so maybe this
should be no surprise. This is a great website for anyone with an interest
in the North East, a collection of images and explanations about the area,
some great black and white images, of people and places. Really fantastic
browsing stuff, and as I said it wont take an age to load each page
http://www.luppitt.net/
Continuing my fascination with websites concentrating on small geographic
areas this is the website for Luppitt in Devon. This is a nice website, with
lots of information about a small parish, and indeed Devon Life. As yet the
records on the site are limited, but it promises more in the future, it is a
little slow to load, and there are a few annoying pop up screens but
otherwise a decent little site
