GENUKI Family History News
No 70

3rd October 2001

Hello everyone and welcome to this 70th GENUKI Family History News

Well the results of the Website poll are in and here are the top three as
voted for by you.

1st was GENUKI (www.genuki.org.uk) with 21 percent of the vote
2nd was The Free BMD site from Rootsweb with 10 percent of the vote
3rd was Family Search (www.familysearch.org) with 8 percent of the vote

The vote was very spread out, with lots of you recommending individual
sites, thank you all for your votes.

I thought I would also add my top three which I have found most helpful over
the last year:

1st is GENUKI
2nd is Cyndi’s List (www.cyndislist.com)
3rd is the PRO site (www.pro.gov.uk)

The Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet web page for
England - http://www.CyndisList.com/england.htm - has recently been
expanded to include a separate web page for each of the ancient
counties of England. Links to each county web page may be found
at http://www.CyndisList.com/england.htm#Locality or
http://www.CyndisList.com/eng-index.htm .

Links of general genealogical interest for England as a whole
remain on the web page for England. Links specific to individual
counties will now be found on their respective county
pages. Suggestions for additional county genealogy links are
gratefully received at http://www.CyndisList.com/newlink.htm

September 2001 - includes additions to the Society publications on
fiche, more photographs, updated members' research interests and
marriage index, additional transcription indexes and maps to locate
farms, churches and chapels:
NEW Ordnance Survey 1" maps, of the whole of Dyfed, digitised and
retrievable by grid reference location.
Over 200 NEW images, of churches and chapels, and repository details
updated to reflect latest additions at County Record Offices and
National Library of Wales.
NEW Cardiganshire farm histories and photographs added with related
extracts from "Historic Cardiganshire Homes" by kind permission of
Brawdy Books.
Six NEW articles on family history, from the Society journal, bringing
the total to fifty so far.
NEW index started to Dyfed family trees and pedigrees held at some
repositories including by the Society.
NEW transcriptions added to Cardiganshire Vol. 1 to 5 indexes of
Monumental Inscriptions on fiche.
Additional fiche for sale (indicated by *) including the NEW Merlin
Indexes for Carmarthenshire.
Please note that there were some errors in the 'for sale' list, included
with the August Journal, and these are corrected on the Website.
All the above, and much much more, can be found at:
www.westwales.co.uk/dfhs/dfhs.htm

I received this plea for help from the North Somerset FreeCen co-ordinator
recently:

I'm sure you've heard of this project so I won't go into detail. However, I
have 28 sets fiche of N Somerset 1891 census to transcribe and would dearly
love some volunteer assistance.

1 set is up to 4 fiche, but there's no guarantee that each fiche will be
full and volunteers will need access to both computer and microfiche! I'm
happy to provide a list of districts covered so that volunteers can probably
transcribe their own area. Prospective volunteers can check out more details
at www.freecen.rootsweb.com/ and if they're interested in helping out, can
contact me for more details.

Webpage reviews

http://www.melcombe.freeserve.co.uk/source/renkioilist.htm
If you are interested in matters military, or had ancestors that might have
fought or served in the Crimean war this will be an interesting website for
you. The main parts of the site are a list of 'Florence Nightingale Nurses'
serving in the Crimean war, and a list of the staff members of the Renkioi
Hospital during this time. The site is fairly basic, although there is some
information on individuals which will give you a bit of background history.
The design is basic, but not unwieldy and you can easily move around the
site.

Here is another one of those nifty little sites i keep coming across that
are information exchanges and could develop into very useful sites. This is
a list of old English Wills, not just an index, but also a transcription.
Rather like a civil registration certificate exchange there is no way that
coverage could be comprehensive due to the webspace involved, but there is
no reason why there could not be a will of interest to you here. The beauty
of the site is the fact that the transcription is there, it may not be
accurate, and original sources must always be consulted but it will give you
a good idea of what the will is about! The site is also a boon for people
like me who like to read wills anyway! I always find they give an insight
into peoples lives like no other document. Nice and easy on the eye the site
has a basic, and very functional design.

http://pws.prserv.net/Kings.Lynn/
A nice little site, concerning the Fiddaman family of Norfolk, and most
particularly Kings Lynn. The main purpose of the site really is to promote
the authors book of a particular family members glimpses of Kings Lynn in
the
mid to late nineteenth century. The site is attractively designed, using
frames which is a personal dislike, but I have to concede they are used
well. Easy to read the sight is a pleasure to browse, and does contain some
interesting information on this Norfolk family
