A rapidly increasing number of transcripts and indexes
to records of
births, marriages and deaths are now available on the
internet. The purpose of
this directory is to identify these web pages, and to
indicate where they,
and various introductory information, can be found.
The listings are
primarily concerned with civil registration and parish
registers, although
associated records such as bishop's transcripts,
marriage licences, etc. are
included. The arrangement is by county, sub-divided
into a number of sections.
Part 1.. General, Southern England, The Marches and
Wales.
Part 2.. The Midlands, Northern England and East
Anglia.
Published F.F.H.S., 2002. Price £6.60 per part (inc UK
p&p). Overseas:

NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS
Post Office Directory of Herefordshire 1879
Each town, village and hamlet in the county is
described, with details of local history, facilities
and institutions to help you understand the lives of
your ancestors.
Kelly's Directory of Cumberland 1894
A very comprehensive directory with descriptons of the
local facilities and institutions in each town,
village and hamlet in the county and directories of
private residents and tradespeople.
Post Office Directory of Cornwall 1856
One fascinating section of this directory gives
details, such as depth, workings, transport,
shareholders, pursers and captains, of the mines in
Cornwall and Devon.
Post Office Directory of Northamptonshire 1877
Each place has its own lists of private residents and
tradespeople.
Kelly's Directory of Wiltshire 1903
Each town, village and hamlet in the county is
described, with details of local history, facilities
and institutions to help you understand the lives of
your ancestors.
Post Office Directory of Hampshire 1849
This directory will be especially useful to those
researching the 1851 census as it will often provide
an address which one can search the indexes.
Post Office Directory of Sussex 1878
A large and comprehensive directory of the county.
Kelly's Directory of Cambridgeshire 1892
Each place has its own lists of private residents and
tradespeople
White's 1849 General Directory of the Town & Borough
of Sheffield within twelve miles
William White's county directories are famous for
their incredibly detailed descriptions of places and
superb directories of almost every person, from
gardener to gentleman. The more specialised local
directories he produced, such as this one, are even
better, cramming in even more detail.
The directory covers an area roughly twelve miles
around Sheffield, including Rotherham, plus
Chesterfield and dozens of villages in Derbyshire.
White's 1853 Directory & Gazetteer of Leeds, Bradford,
Halifax, Huddersfield & Wakefield
A superb example of William White's more localised
directories covering Leeds, Bradford, Halifax,
Huddersfield, Wakefield, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike,
Bingley, Keighley, Skipton, Settle, Todmorden and
roughly six hundred villages and hamlets. If the title
page is to be believed it covers 'nearly one million
inhabitants', we haven't counted them though!

WEBPAGE REVIEWS
http://www.rootdig.com/adn/misconceptions.html
This is so far from my normally reviewed site that it
took me a little while to work out whether to include
it or not. Then I realised it was the first Genealogy
based site that I had added to my favourite list for
quite a while, and I thought it best if everyone knew
about it. It serves no real useful purpose and is
American based, holding little about the UK. However
when we are all doing our research one of the best
reminders we can have is of the fallibility of our
information. This site lists common genealogical
misconceptions with a brutal sense of honesty and
humour, read it, and enjoy it, I thought it was truly
marvellous. And for those of you with castle owning,
notorious ancestors learnt about on the Internet I
would suggest you dont go to this site. Simple one
page site that will have you chuckling, I hope so, it
did me
http://www.helstonhistory.co.uk/
A website dedicated to the town of Helston in Cornwall
and the Lizard Peninsula. This site is packed with
fascinating local history, of famous people, of
shipwrecks and of the town itself. There is lots of
information on the site mainly concerning local
history. The site had its problems for me as I was
looking at it from a particularly slow internet
connection. There are lots of large images which take
a long time to download, and the navigation is not
the easiest to work out, if it could be simplified it
would be an excellent site for those with Cornish
ancestors.

If this is of use to you in your own personal
research, drop me a line
At and I will put you
in touch with the current holder
Meanwhile, if you have a certificate you don't need
that may be of use to someone else then drop me a
line, and we will advertise it in an upcoming
newsletter .
We have changed the certificate system a little, to
give hopefully an added opportunity for sharing
information. If you have a spare certificate that is
of no use to you at all then you can either send me
the details, as normal, or send me the certificate. If
the certificate is sent to me then it will be sent on
to any enquiries. All spare certificates sent to me
will have their details registered on Free BMD. After
six months if nobody has claimed the certificates as
interesting to their research then they will be
deposited at the SoG library. I will however keep all
the details of the certificate on file and pass them
on to any relevant one name studies registered with
the Guild of One Name Studies.
The address for spare certificates to be sent to is:

USING Probate Inventories.
A study day with Barrie Trinder
Saturday 14 December at 10.30am, SoG London
This practical course will be concerned with the ways
in which probate
inventories and wills can increase our understanding
of the social and
economic history of the 17th and 18th centuries. The
main sessions
will be devoted to analysing and learning the language
of inventories in order
to illustrate aspects of comestic life and the world
of work. Links will
be established between inventories and other kinds of
documents, including
parish registers and hearth tax returns, as well as
with pictorial sources.
The course will provide a practical introduction to
wills and inventories
for people interested in family history who are
beginning to work on the,
or who would like to do so.
All documents used will be in transcribed form,
although students will be
welcome to bring for discussion copies of the
documentson which they have
worked themselves, whether transcribed or not.
Barrie Trinder is a writer and lecturer on social
history and industrial archaeology, best known for his
work on the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire. He has been
