GENUKI FAMILY HISTORY NEWS
No 124
3 February 2003
Hi Everyone and welcome to this 124th GENUKI Family
History News. Apologies for the long gap between
issues. I found myself with very limited internet
access in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I am now in
Bermuda and fully able to send this issue. I hope you
find something of interest.
The Parish Chest at www.parishchest.com has two new
retailers in it Stuart Raymond with his range of
Genealogical Publicaions and Acorns2Oaks
The Dyfed FHS website at
www.dyfedfhs.org.uk
has been updated as follows:Additional pedigrees
indexed, ancestral marriages, chapel photographs
forall counties and farm histories for
Carmarthenshire.
The Society Journal Index has been extended to include
all the issues
In Volume 7.Old postcards, of town streets and notable
buildings, are being scanned
And 61 images can be accessed from the towns page.
Members are reminded that the AGM will be held in
Carmarthen on Saturday, 15th February.
NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS
Wonderful London - St John Adcock
Published in the 1920's in three large volumes with,
literally, hundreds of superb photographs of all
aspects of London life. Rich or poor, old or young,
the slums and palaces, there are even some which are
captioned 'a view of xxxx from an exciting new vantage
point' (an aeroplane!!).
The text matches the quality of the images and is
wonderfully evocative. It is quite sad to realise that
very little of what we can see in this book remains
standing today due to slum clearance, war-time bombing
and the inexorable march of 'progress'.
Middlesex County Records - Sessions Books 1689-1709
A continuation of the earlier works by the Middlesex
Record Society. Unique accounts of criminal and civil
proceedings in London and Middlesex which involve
people from all over the country
Cook's 1894 Directory of Great Yarmouth
A directory for any single town or city is always an
absolute gem as the attention to detail is incredible.
A Topographical and Historical Description of
Nottinghamshire - Laird 1810
Extremely detailed accounts of the county's towns,
churches, castles, antiquities, monuments and scenery
plus notices and biographies of 'Eminent and Learned
Men to whom this County has given Birth'.

WEBPAGE REVIEWS
http://freespace.virgin.net/maureen.hayton/family.htm
A website devoted to the Hayton family, and a one name
study. A nicely designed, easy to use website. My
recommendation would be that the site would improve
greatly with a few of the one name study records being
put on line, there is a nice tree but a little more
information would just add to the website. It is easy
to use and attractive on the eye. A useful site if you
find this name in your research
http://www.scottishdocuments.com/content/research_waypeopleworked.asp
I reviewed a different part of this website not so
long ago and now scottishdocuments.com have again come
up with a brilliant page. These pages are a listing of
Scottish Occupations sourced from documents between
1500 and 1875. Listed alphabetically and split into
easily downloaded pages each occupation has a brief
description, and any alternative spellings as well.
This is quick to download, easy to use, pleasant on
the eye, and really useful information. A fantastic
site.
http://www.stowman.fsnet.co.uk/
This was a truly fascinating site dedicated to the
history of Stowmarket in Suffolk. There is so much
information on the site it is almost impossible to
describe, but among the best of it is a collection of
pictures and information on inns and pubs, a report of
an explosion at the Gun Cotton factory in 1871 which
is obviously well researched, a list of available
family history resources, notable families and
connections, as well as many, many photographs and
images. I found some of the design and font a little
uncomfortable for my own tastes, mainly as I found the
font a little large, but as the only negative point of
an otherwise truly superb site I really am not
complaining! A must visit if your ancestors came from
this region
