Hi Everyone and welcome to this weeks GENUKI Family

The University of Leicester's Historical Directories
project (http://www.historicaldirectories.org) will be
of interest to researchers and genealogists using
GENUKI

The project team, based at the University Library, are
producing a digital collection of eighteenth,
nineteenth and early twentieth-century local and trade
directories from England and Wales.
Directories of counties and towns are among the most
important sources for local and genealogical studies.
They include lists of names, addresses and occupations
of the inhabitants of the counties and towns they
describe, and successive editions reflect the changes
in the localities
over a period of time. High quality digital
reproductions of a large selection of these
comparatively rare books, previously only found in
specialist libraries and record offices, are being
made freely available online to anyone with an
Internet connection. This online national collection
will bring together a greater number and range of
directories than any one library could provide. By
March 2004 500 books will be available on line, from
the University Library's
own English Local History collection and also from
other regional collections. The Historical Directories
website features a fast and powerful search engine so
that family surnames, occupations, addresses and other
key words or phrases can be located easily and quickly
to their exact places on pages within the digitised
texts.

NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS

Hertfordshire County Records - Sessions Rolls
1581-1894
Criminal and civil proceedings in the County of
Hertfordshire over a period of more than three hundred
years.
Historically Hertfordshire has always a fairly low
native population but it was a main route to and from
London. Folk travelling from Scotland, the North of
England, the Midlands and even Wales would have passed
though the county on their way to the capital, some
settling there for a sort period, or even permanently
A huge set of eight volumes which were very kindly
loaned to the Project by the London Borough of Barnet

WEBPAGE REVIEWS

http://www.suffolkcc.gov.uk/sro/roh/index.html
The Roll of honour for the county of Suffolk, this is
a nicely designed website listing the names, parishes
and regiments or ships of those Suffolk men who were
killed in action in World War One. The index page is
useful and gives the background to the roll, and the
reason for any inaccuracies, and the reason why
Ipswich is not included in the roll! The seach
mechanism is good and quick, and this provides an easy
on line reference tool for those of us with ancestors
in Suffolk, a nice site

http://www.patbrit.com/eng/PBmain.html
Carrying on a recent theme of finding fascinatingly
interesting sites of Brits overseas, this is perhaps
the best I have yet seen. This site is dedicated to
the British in Patagonia, and area which covers both
Argentina and Chile. The site is in Spanish and
English so speakers of either language can view it. It
is unfortunately frame designed which lets the design
down a touch but this is more than made up for by the
amazing level of content on the site. You wil be able
to find details of social life, institutions, work and
immigration as well as recorded births, marriages,
deaths and memorials. There are passenger lists,
consul registrations, excerpts from histories, and
just about every record you might want to find. And,
they are all searchable from the front page which
makes the site unbelievably useful for family
historians. You will also learn a lot of background
and fascinating facts, such as the immigration from th
Isle of Lewis and much much more, please visit this
site, it is a gem!

READERS QUERIES

I keep reading about Pigots Directory and am
particularly interested in the Hertfordshire one. Can
someone explain to me what I am likely to find in
there and advise where they are available. Are they
obtainable at Libraries or do we have to buy them?
What sort of information do they hold and is it of
use to a relative beginner?
Lynn Hudson -

As mentioned previously this is our ‘new’ section,
although of course it is an old method of picking
others brains! I get a lot of enquiries and are
realistically unable to answer them all as I don’t
have the expertise

We will publish one query a week, and they will be on
first come first served basis.

To get a query published you must:
Make it less than 200 words in length
Include your name & email address for direct response
from subscribers
Send it to making the email
title “reader query”
Be a subscriber to the newsletter

To Respond:
Please respond directly to the reader, replies sent to
me will be forward, but by nature they will be
received much later

Please help out other readers when you can!
Information sharing is one of the best aspects of
Family History, and kindness will often be returned.
Above all Information sharing is the reason this
newsletter exists!
