GENUKI FAMILY HISTORY NEWS
No 127
27 February 2003
Hi Everyone and welcome to this weeks issue of GENUKI
Family History News
Some of you will be aware of the most astonishing news
that I heard today, and will pass on to you. The
Society of Genealogists Enterprises has now decided to
close its bookshop. I feel saddened that the SoG does
not see the value and commercial possibilities of
having a bookshop on its premises. It appears that
somehow the facility has been losing money for some
time and instead of planning and budgeting for the
future and understanding the possibilities of this
they have instead decided to close. To me, an
incredibly short sighted decision, but others may see
the sense. It will no doubt benefit other retailers,
who will not necessarily put any profit back into
family history.
Most of all I feel saddened for the staff, some of
whom have put a lot of time and effort to make the
bookshop work.
I would ask them to reconsider this rash decision but
fear my voice would not be heard
On a brighter note, I have seen that the Federation of
Family History Societies are taking over Genfair,
after the site was closed after one of the founders
untimely passing away. Hopefully under their
stewardship the site will continue to grow, and indeed
prove online selling can be profitable
Thanks to Nick Keeler for spotting the following item
in the local Bristol Press
"Public records on microfilm containing millions of
personal details have gone missing from Bristol
Central Library.Up to 1,400 microfilms that relate to
births are missing, as are 1,000
relating to marriages and 1,000 to deaths.
One microfilm is said by the library to hold
"hundreds" of details.
They were discovered to be missing when users at the
library began tracing
their family history.
The library has estimated that it will cost £20,000 to
replace the missing microfilm.
Almost all the records refer to surnames beginning
with "W", and date from 1837 to 1992.
Robert Harrison, from Bristol Central Library, would
not speculate on why the records may have gone missing
Police have launched an investigation.

WEBPAGE REVIEWS
http://www.thrale.com/
A truly fantastic one name website that will be
interesting to all family history researchers I am
sure. The site is dedicated to the Thrale family, and
is one of the best designed websites I have seen in
the family history sphere. Soft and easy on the easy
and extremely easy to navigate the designers of this
site should be very proud of themselves. The site also
contains an awful lot of information, including trees,
wills, civil records, stories of the family, and their
connections. I found the background information highly
entertaining and informative and truly wish more sites
could be like this. My only quibble was being unable
to view the tree online there was an error on this,
but that was a small problem on an otherwise excellent
site
http://www.geocities.com/bruceoz02/clarke
The Website of the Clarke family from the Preston area
of Lancashire. This is an interesting website that
traces the history of this family from the seventeenth
century up to the twentieth century. There is a lot of
information here, and to be honest the page would be
better split up, with a decent navigation at the top,
which would enable people to view the site more
easily, and without a lot of text on each page. That
said it is an interesting site, and well worth a visit

you at all then you can either send me the details via
email, or send me the certificate. If the certificate
is sent to me then it will be sent on to any
