GENUKI FAMILY HISTORY NEWS
No 150
24 October 2003
Hello everyone and a warm welcome to our 150th
edition, still cant quite believe I have done this
many, and we are still going strong!
However my apologies for the long gap. The Rootsweb
admin server was out of action for a week meaning I
could not do some of the work needed to make sure we
are not spamming people who no longer want the
newsletter and then last week I came down with a
terrible cold, so I have been out of action! Anyway,
back to business here is this weeks newsletter!
Rootmap and Anthony Adolph have joined the other
retailers at the still fast growing Parish Chest
(www.parishchest.com)
I received this email from Stuart Raymond this week:
Following on the enormous success of my 'Family
History on the Web: an Internet Directory for England
& Wales', I find myself preparing a 3rd edition. I
know you have criticised the very idea of printed web
directories in the past (I did not give this a good
review, but we are all wrong sometimes, or so I am
told always!!! Rob); however, the fact is that many
people have told me how useful they are - and the
sales figures speak for themselves. Currency is a
problem I agree - but approx 90% of the URLs in the
2nd edition will be the same in the third edition. The
reason I am emailing you is that I need information on
new sites that ought to be included in the 3rd
edition. I do keep track of new sites listed by
yourself, in Cyndislist, and in Family Tree Magazine;
however, it is likely that some of your readers will
know of new sites which I ought to list, but may not
have picked up. I would be very grateful if they could
e-mail me with details of such sites.

I received this news this week from Achievements:
Gretna Green Marriage Index On-Line at
http://www.achievements.co.uk
Family histories abound with stories of elopements.
Often the destination of couples who wished to marry
without parental consent was Gretna Green, just over
the border with Scotland in "debatable land". After
1753, when English law forbad irregular marriages, a
number of people who objected to marrying in a church
wed in border centres where the couple's own consent
to marriage before witnesses was legal under Scottish
Law. Gretna is the most famous of these. Marriages
were conducted by self appointed ministers at the
border Toll booths along the few roads into Scotland.
The "priests", as they called themselves, often had
other jobs giving rise to the stories of being married
over an anvil by the village Blacksmith. Held at The
Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies
(www.ihgs.ac.uk) the index covers entries between 1795
and 1895, with a few earlier references. In all over
4500 entries are recorded for those lost marriages.
Ask yourself: "Did my great-great-great grandmother
elope to Gretna?

WEBPAGE REVIEWS
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bob.cumberbatch/index.htm
A nice, if somewhat over fussy website dedicated to
the Cumberbatch name, possibly most famously attached
to the Cumberbatch Trophy in Aviation. The site has a
lot of details of the various families, including a
lot of background work, social history and a bit of
local history. There are some nice trees, and
genealogy, and the site is well worth a browse. I
found the fussiness of the design and page a little
irritating after a while, but maybe you will have more
patience than me! There was a nice section of the
Cumberbatch family in Barbados, which was well
researched and like most things unusual a little more
interesting than the main family!
http://www.bodiam-mill.net/
Absolutely top-notch website. I was surprised when I
first looked at this, and then after a while was even
more surprised you did not have to pay! (Please dont
get any ideas webmaster! ) This is a website
revolving around the village of Sandhurst in Kent. On
the site are a multitude of lists, including fully
transcribed parish register, apprenticeship records,
title deeds, property deeds, wills, parish books. All
this and a large amount of local history as well. If
your ancestors came from this area this website will
provide you with such a wealth of information you will
not believe it, I just wish there were thousands more
websites like this. Plain and simple in design it is
not much to look at, but barring a slow loading time
the site is easy to move around. Some pages have a lot
of html coding on them and take some time to load, but
most are fine
http://www.benpalmer.co.uk/movillerecords.htm
Another absolutely stunning site revolving around one
place, this is a website concerned with Moville in
County Donegal Ireland. The sheer amount of records on
this site makes it a contender for the best website I
have seen this year, combine this with a clarity of
design and an ease of navigation that is excellent
makes this site one of my all time favourites.
Contained on the site are transcriptions of Griffiths
Valuation, 1901 & 1911 census, mid nineteenth century
directories, and early muster rolls making the dates
of transcriptions from 1630 to 1911, there is also a
history of the area, and some pictures. A truly
excellent site that all of you should visit if you
have Donegal Ancestors its worth a visit, if not its
worth a visit to see just what you can do with a
locality website
