GENUKI FAMILY HISTORY NEWS
No 161
30 March 2004
HI Everyone and welcome to this weeks GENUKI Family
History News. I hope there is something in here you
will find interesting!
I received this call for help with FREECEN this week,
if you can help, why don you, after all it is an
extremely worthwhile project:
Listers may have heard of the FREECENS project which
aims to put the eighteenth century Census on line for
free access by all.
I am the co-ordinator for the County of Sussex and I'm
seeking volunteers to join our rather small, but
worldwide, team to assist in the transcription of the
1891 Census for that county. The records for this
Census are held on microfiche so acccess to a fiche
reader is necessary.
Why not visit our Web-site at
http://freecen.rootsweb.com to read all about it. To
find what is already on line click on 'Database
Coverage' in the left hand column where you will be
presented with a list of Counties,.click on 'Details'
against the County of interest and there will be a
listing
Of Parishes with those that are already on line
indicated. My particular County have completed about
13 percent of the 1891 to date, others a great deal
more and some less.
If you are able to devote a few hours a week to this
very worthwhile project and would like to assist for
Sussex please contact me at
and you will be made
very welcome. If your interests lie elsewhere the
names of the co-ordinators for the various
Counties can be found on the Web-site.
Best wishes and hoping to hear from you soon.
NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS
Preston, Barrow & District Trade Directory 1913
A comprehensive classified directory of people with
trades, listing names and addresses. A wonderful
snapshot in time just before the First World War.
Somerset - Victoria County History Vol. 1
Published in 1906, this magnificent book tells the
political, social, economic, ecclesiastical and
natural history of Somerset from the time of the
Conquest. It contains really in-depth sections on
Early Man and Romano British Somerset, a translation
and critical study of the Doomsday Survey and lists of
land with the landowners and contents.
Norfolk 1861 Census Registration Districts
Scanned images of all of the original census
enumerator's books for Norfolk, reproduced on a
multiple CD set for reading using Adobe Acrobat
Reader.
South Australia and Western Australia - A. Trollope
This book includes descriptions of various places in
both South Australia and Western Australia. These are
quite detailed and usually start with the founding or
naming of the place, and continue through their early
history. A great read for all those interested in
early colonial history in South Australia and Western
Australia.
The Australian Contingent: History of Patriotic
Movement in New South Wales - F. Hutchinson
This is a small but important work. It tells the story
of the Australia (New South Wales) Contingent in the
Sudan War from March to June 1885. The contingent, an
infantry battalion of 522 men and 24 officers and an
artillery battery of 212 men, was ready to sail on 3
March 1885. It left Sydney amid much public fanfare.
Support was not, however, universal, and many viewed
the proceedings with indifference or even hostility.
Pugh's Alamanac and Directory of Queensland 1895 - T.
Pugh
A very rare publication that really is fascinating.
For anyone with connections to Queensland this is the
CD for you.
A Dictionary of Violin Makers - C. Stainer 1896
Published in 1896, and revised in 1909, this wonderful
book is a catalogue of violin makers compiled from
various sources.

WEBPAGE REVIEWS
http://www.ruralhistory.org/index.html
The website of the Museum of English Rural Life. Based
at Reading University the Museum holds collections of
all kinds related to rural life in the UK. The website
has details of these collections, educational
resources, and online exhibitions. I found this site
particularly interesting as it gives a good insight
into the way many of our ancestors lived. Not directly
useful in a genealogical sense it will still be of
interest ot most people. There are some images and
graphics that will take a little time to load, but a
good site.
http://www.alliance-france-genealogie.org/
Ok, not strictly UK orientated but I thought it worth
a mention in this column, this is the website of the
Alliance France Genealogie. It is a website containing
links to the whereabouts of records for French
genealogy and records in many websites. There are many
links on the site for military, civil, naturalisation
and many other records. You will need a working
knowledge of French to get the best out of the site,
but otherwise it is quite a simple process.
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~frpayments/KD1740/
A nice website this for anyone with reasonably well to
do ancestors in London in the mid eighteenth century.
The site is a transcription of Kents Directory of
1740, covering London (City), Westminster and
Southwark. The directory would have been by
subscription so it is mainly merchants, businessmen
and the more well to do you will find. The
transcription is split over several pages for easier
loading, and it is very easy to find any possible
entries. Spoilt a little bit by pop ups but otherwise
an easy to use and simple site that will be worth
referring to if you have London Ancestors. The details
you will find are name, occupation and basic address.
