Subject: [UK-GEN-NEWBIES] Birth / christening dates
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 16:28:52 +0000 (GMT)
Hi list,
Am I right in thinking that before 1837 there was no official record of births and that the first record one can hope to find is a christening date ?
Sometimes the IGI gives a birth date and sometimes a christening date and quite often they are both given the same date. It seems unlikely that the child was christened on the same day it was born so I always presume this is the christening date and that I am unlikely to ever find the birth date.
Am I right ?
Yours - ever a newbie, Mark of Ripon uk
