I've recently found my ggg grandfathers service record at the National Archives. He was attested to the 82nd Foot Regiment in 1819 ages 16 in Rochester, Kent. He was born in Mallow, Cork and I was led to believe the regiment was based in Ireland, how come he had to go to Rochester to join up? Also - his records show he served abroad for 12 years, 2 in Gibraltar and 10 somewhere illegible. Can anyone help with where this might be? He served 26 years altogether with the regiment but I haven't been able to trace their movements.
