Hi Robin,
Incase it helps - my website is very basic but contains a number of
resources - its grown and grown, and so isn't as easy to use as it should
be.
The resources below cover well over 100,000 names, quite a number of
historical events, etc. Its very much a "lucky dip," most newspapers are pre
1850, the most recent being from 1876 (the earliest from the 1600's). To get
the best results broadband is essential.
Resources :
a) My Surname Interests - including a large number of pages for my One Name
Study (Spanswick);
b) Fragments of Lost Lives - Document scans (from the the 1700's all over
the UK) which represents a small % of my document collection
c) North Wiltshire Muster from 1539
d) Newspaper List - If you scroll to the bottom of the page you can dip
into a selection of "Favourite" reports, a list of titles and dates, and
some images of newpapers.
e) Newspaper Transcripts
f) Under the FAQ is a list of some of the newspaper indexes available on the
Web [and some in libraries]
All can be searched via FreeFind
Given the size of the site - I would recommend click on the "Find" Button
[at top of home page Free Find] don't immediately search for any name;
you'll then be taken to a new screen and click on "advanced search", this
gives more options. So for example if you are searching for the surname
Ranger, I would advise ticking the "case sensitive option" this will filter
only on Ranger and ignore ranger (not a surname) - this will bring up the
options, click on the link which will take you to the correct page - however
the search engine won't take you to the line you want so Press "Ctrl F" to
get to the exact reference.
The Home page is accessed from the link below - hope this helps
