Hello Listers,
I've been subscribed for quite awhile now, but have never posted.
I'd say it's high time! I'll try and make this not be too long...
-I have a Mary Alice BARROW born on 26 Nov 1888, in the village of
Greenodd, parish of Egton-cum-Newland.
There is no father listed, believe she was born out-of-wedlock, and
later came to be known as the daughter of Alfred NEWSHAM (see the
marriage of Edith BARROW, below).
Her mother was Edith Margaret Sherock (spelling?) BARROW, born abt.
1869.
The person who was the informant to the Registrar was a John BARROW,
Occupier, same village.
-Edith BARROW married 2 years later - on 18 Oct 1890, to Alfred
NEWSHAM (born abt. 1867 - family history called him James), in St.
Anne's Church, the Parish of St. Anne's, Lancaster.
They were married by license.
Edith is listed as Spinster, Alfred as Bachelor and Carter.
Edith is listed as living at 47 Moors Lane, with Alfred as living at
Stone Row Head, Asylum Road.
Edith's father is listed as Thomas BARROW (gardener), so the John
BARROW from above must be an uncle? or very older brother?
Alfred's father is listed as Thomas NEWSHAM (carter).
There is a family of BARROWs in Greenodd in 1891 census as follows:-
John B, Head, 39, Signalman, born Skerton, Lancashire
Alice, Wife, 40, born Greenhow Hill, Yorkshire
John, son, 9, Scholar, born Arnside, Westmorland
Clara A, daughter , 7, Scholar, born Arnside, Westmorland
Harry, son, 5, Scholar, born Egton cum Newland, Lancashire
Sarah J, 9 months, born Egton cum Newland
I just can't help but think this is the John BARROW who reported the
birth of Mary Alice BARROW for the mother, Edith BARROW. Also, that it
must be some relation that she went to live with because she was
pregnant and not married.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?!
I know there was at least one family of BARROWs in Greenodd until the
1930's at least!
I just feel there is a connection, as I know Greenodd is (or was) a
small village.
I'm stuck here...someone Please Help!!!
Thank you so much in advance!!!
(I'm sorry - this ended up being fairly long, anyway!) : )
