There is a clock museum situated within the Guildhall Library building
(Aldermanbury, EC2) but it was closed for a major refurbishment, and was
expected to re-open in late April 2002 with an exhibition tracing the
development of clocks and watches through the centuries. Further information
about the re-opening was to be posted at their website
http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/leisure_heritage/libraries_archives_museums_gal
leries/clock_museum/clock_museum.htm
Somewhat further afield (ie beyond Essex) is The Manor House Museum at Bury
St Edmunds, Suffolk. 'Founded upon collections assembled over more than a
century, this museum of art and horology collects, preserves and presents two
quite different, but complementary, themes. One is of the changing artistic
tastes and achievements of local people; the other is of the development of
timekeeping in Britain, Europe and America.' There is a fabulous KNIBB
longcase clock housed there which is how I happen to know about the museum.
