Hi,
I am new to the list and am not quite sure if I am in the right spot or not.
Perhaps someone can help me out. My Great Grandmother unfortunately was
named of all things Sarah Smith and was working in a private home in London
when she met her future husband, my Great Grandfather William Goss, who was
working in London. He was delivering groceries to the home where she was
working. Her Father was an alcoholic and this is all I know about her
parents. I was operating under the assumption that she was an orphan until a
few months ago when an Uncle informed me that she knew who her Father was and
that he had a drinking problem. She was born on June 28, 1857 and was
married in 1877. Would a person with this background be a product of a
workhouse? Did these places farm individuals out to private homes to work?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
