Something happened for HENRY AND HANNAH to be seperated as in the
workhouse he was recorded as still being married. My family have never been
able to find out if they had more children or if SOPHIE BENHAM was their
daughter. I would be most grateful if someone could help me obtain a record
of HENRY'S time spent in the workhouse and if their was a record of his
family (children) with dates of birth etc.

Hello Mary,

The most likely explanation for Henry being in the workhsoue but his wife
living outside is that Henry was sick and needed medical treatment. The
workhouses provided the only medical facilities available to people who were
unable to pay for a doctor or who were too ill to be cared for at home
(there were virtually no other hospitals at all).

Unfortunately I don't think there are any records for the workhouse which
would help you establish why Henry was there - there certainly don't appear
to be any admission registers surviving for the time he was there. I would
suggest that you look for Henry's death certificate in the GRO Index of
deaths. If Henry died soon after 1881 then he may have still been in the
workhouse and the certificate will give you the cause of death

As to finding their other children, you need to combine the GRO indexes of
births with the 10 yearly census returns to try and establish what children
they had. If you know they lived in one place then it can be useful to check
the local parish registers for baptisms (and burials) of children, but if
they moved about then the GRO index plus census is your only realistic
source.

Good luck
