> Hello Mary - Many thanks for your kind reply - where can I see the 1851
Census for Tanfield workhouse please? Yes, he may well have been there then,
which would be a great find, especially if I could find out why he was
there.
Hi Pat,
The Family Records Centre in London have all the census returns for all of
England and Wales, alternatively the County Record Offices have the census
returns for their area. Which is nearer to you, London or Yorkshire (I know
where I would rather go :-)).
Enjoy your course - I find I can certainly make more sense of my ancestors
by knowing more about the times they lived in. Some of it is jaw dropping
too - I am currently reading abook written in 1913 about how working class
women managed in Lambeth, London on their husbands wages of about 20s (£1) a
week, the book details their weekly diet, how much they paid for rent, coal,
soap etc etc and how they managed when someone was ill or needed new clothes
or boots, for a late 20th Century girl with 2 healthy well fed children it
is a VERY sobering read and I would recommend it to anyone - it called
"Round About A Pound A Week" by Maud Pember Reeves.
Good luck in your research
