Hi Paula,
When the Poor Law Unions were disbanded in 1930, their responsibilities were
actually transferred to local councils so many homes and hospitals carried
on much as before but "under new management".

The records for Styal Homes are almost certainly now held by the appropriate
County Council (Lancashire or Cheshire, I'm not sure which) and you should
approach their Social Services Department for assistance. They will not
allow you access to the records but they may carry out a search on your
behalf for family reasons, for example if your mother was trying to trace
any siblings who she was separated from, but I'm not sure how much they will
release to you even in those circumstances.

Good luck
