Hello Adrian,
Records for the County of London Lunatic Asylum are held by the London
Metropolitan Archives.
The reasons for admittance to a "lunatic asylum" could be varied and vast,
ranging from a number of disorders that we would not consider "mental
illness" by todays standards.
Do you have Joseph STOCKTON'S death certificate?
This would give you some idea of the reason for him being admitted, although
the admission registers would ideally tell you more.
