Hi Pat,

The records for South Shields Union are at Tyne and Wear Archives in
Newcastle upon Tyne and include the Admission and Discharge Registers from
1897-1926 so there is a very good chance of finding the childrens admission
to the workhouse, Grandfathers running away and the discharge of the
youngest to the orphange.

There are also some minute books which may be worth checking as there may be
mention of the family in them, but don't be too hopeful.
