> I am new to the list and was wondering if anyone could point me in the
right direction please. One of my relatives died at the Middlesex County
Lunatic Asylum Wandsworth in 1893.Her occupation was given as a nurse-I find
this very puzzling as she had, according to my research never worked and
would have been at least 68 years old on admission. Her address was given as
Wood Green and certainly this was her address as at 1891 census.Could
someone please tell me if there are any records existing for this asylum and
why they would employ a 68 year old as a nurse with no previous
experience,or would she be just a patient.
Hi Margaret,
Nurse was a pretty loose term in the 19th century and she may have been
employed privately either looking after children or sick or elderly persons
in their own homes. Also there was no such thing as retirment and it was the
lucky few who could take their autumn years easier - for many people they
worked until they died. So she could have been employed as a nurse in an
asylum at 68. That said, she could just as easily have been admitted as a
patient. Do you have her death certificate? In the occupation column, women
were normally shown as wife or widow of ...., for a single older lady they
sometimes showed an occupation but it was quite unusual. Also for a patient
of an asylum, they usually showed an address outside the asylum.
If there are any records surviving they will be at the London Metropolitan
Archives. The Middlesex was one of the Metropolitan Asylums Board
institutions so the records would be in the MAB class.
The good news is that for 1893 the records should be open for research
(hospital records are closed for 100 years)
Good luck
