I am new to the list, forgive me if you've already seen this email but I
sent the
original to the list without being subscribed therefore not sure if you have
seen this.

Wonder if SKS could help.

I have a small piece of paper left by my ancestors that states my
GGrandfather
(don't laugh!!) William SMITH was born 26 February 1852 in Charles Street,
Westminster and baptised at St Margarets, Westminster.

The only William SMITH in the indices of the FRC that I could find from
around
the area was in the district of St Martin in the Field.
I ordered the cert and the birth date on the cert matches the above but to
my
surprise it stated William was born in a Workhouse, St Martin's in the
Field.

Would anyone know if there were Workhouses in Charles Street, Westminster
or around St Martins in the Field?
If so, what would his mother (father not stated on cert) likely to be
working as?
Thanks.

Regards - Simon
