Subject: [UK-W&H] Libel Case at St Leonards Workhouse & Infirmary

Dear Listers
I am aware from reports in The Times in December 1881 that a Mrs Mais, the former matron of the Workhouse and Infirmary of St Leonards, Shoreditch, had brought an action for libel against Dr Forbes, the resident medical officer in respect of a written statement he made to the Board of Governors in January 1880. The jury failed to reach a verdict and so a second trial was arranged for May 1882 but postponed and The Times does not record what subsequently happened at or about the retrial.
Unfortunately, none of the newspaper reports give the christian name of Mrs Mais and so I am unable to discern if and how she links in to my Mais family tree and so I would be grateful for advice on how best to find this out and also how best to find out if a retrial was held and what its results were.
Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
