Hi Chris,

Chesterfield is the right workhouse for someone from Shirland although the
village is very close to the border between between Chesterfield and
Mansfield Union, so it just maybe that they went to Mansfield. Its worth
checking just in case as the Chesterfield records are good so if you did not
find them it probably means they went elsewhere.

Mansfield records are at Nottinghamshire Archives in Nottingham but none of
the admission books have survived so it may be a fruitless quest I'm afraid.
