Hi Terry,
Its a bit of a long shot, but have you tried the 1861 census for the area in
which he married? The other ploy would be to find the birth certificates for
all his children and check the 1871 census for the address where they lived
when the child closest to April 1871 was born.
The Irish connection is entirely possible. Sharkey is an Irish name and in
the 1850's and 60's there was a huge migration from Ireland as a result of
the potato famine.
