any hospital records for the St lukes Hospital, Salterhebble, West
Yorkshire.. (looking for details of my greatgrandmother who gave birth there
in 1914 but "apparently" was then kept hospitilazied till her death in
about 1929)

Hi Nicci,

I've had a quick look on the PRO's hospital records database but there is no
hospital listed in Salterhebble. It could have been a small local hospital.
The closest I can find is the Union Infirmary in Bradford whichwas called St
Lukes, but not until the 1920's.

I would first suggest the birth certificate. This will give you the mothers
name and if she was unmarried it may give an occupation. It may also give an
address outside the hospital. It would also be worthwhile finding your great
grandmothers death certificate as this will give more information about the
cause of death, where etc..and may indicate why she was in hospital.

The problem with medical records is that even if they have survived they are
closed for 100 years so you would not be able to look at them. For
information about the hospital I would suggest you contact the West
Yorkshire Archives Service in Wakefield.

Single women were sometimes committed to asylums after they gave birth, but
also conditions such as post natal depression were treated by committing the
sufferer (a practice which has only recently stopped!!).

Good luck
