Hello List
I am new to this list so I will state what I know and what I am looking for.
My Great Grandmother Eliza Miller died in St. Bartholomews Hospital in the registration district of London City in sub district St. Sepulchre All Hallows in the county of London on the 3 of February 1905 at the young age of 40.She had died of thrombosis to her right leg after giving birth to a little girl. This little girl was supposedly adopted by the caretakers of Wenlock House. There was a Wenlock Estate office at 27 Shepperdess walk city road, N,Shorditch West Side Holborn Union Workhouse. E. Williams was master and Mrs P. Williams Matron. This according to the 1902 Post Office Directory. Is it possible that a workhouse would take in a child such as this? I do not know why the family didn't take this baby. My Grandmother I believe was sent to Barnards with her sister at the age of 7 or 8. All this even though there was an older brother who was 22 at the time. My Great Grandfather William Miller was scale maker and had always seemed to be employed during all the ce!
nsus I have checked. Even at the time of Elizas death he was employed at Mr. Pauls Building, Allen Street, Goswell Road. Why wasn't he taking resposibility for these kids. I do recall my grandmother always talking of her father as being a drunk so perhaps that is why. Anyway, sorry to make this so long. If anyone has any information on this Wenlock House or workhouse I would be very grateful. I would really like to find out all I can on this unknown child. Would her birth have been registered? Thank you to all those who took the time to read this and thanks to all those who do quick searches. I am most grateful.
