Dear Sharon,
My understanding is that you could be in the infirmary because you
needed nursing care and could not be nursed at home. Someone
may be able to give dates for laws that made it unnecessary for a
family to be pauperised in order for a member to be cared for in the
infirmary. Three of my great-grandparents died in local (workhouse)
infirmaries. One died in Warrington Union Workhouse/Whitecross
Hospital in 1927. The visiting permit for his wife has "Warrington
Union Workhouse" overstamped "Whitecross Hospital
Warrington". He had been cared for by his wife in the downstairs
front room for some years, but for the last three years he was too ill
for her to nurse and he was in the hospital/workhouse.
I believe infirmaries were usually separate buildings from the
workhouse, built during the 19th century. They developed a life of
their own and laid the basis for our National Health Service. They
passed from the Poor Law Authorities to county and county
borough councils under the 1929 Local Government Act (which
took effect on 1.4.1930), and then to the Ministry of Health under
the 1946 National Health Service Act (which took effect in 1948).
Best Wishes

Hello all. This is my first posting to this list and am wondering if
someone can help me. I have a relation who died at Salford Union
Infirmary (Lancs) in 1916. Does anyone know if this was a
workhouse then? Also could someone please advise as to why it
would become necessary for a person to become a workhouse
inmate at that time. Was it simply unemployment or infirmity or
were there other factors? Any advice/suggestions greatly
appreciated. Regards, Sharon.
