Dear Frances

I think the use of workhouses as night shelters was the last part of
the old Poor Law to disappear. This provision was kept in post war
legislation - although I cannot at the moment put my finger on
which. The "spikes" that received people overnight were eventually
closed in the mid 1980s. I assume their residents were supposed
to be recorded in the census.

Best Wishes

Andrew

I am a new subscriber to the list so please excuse me if I am
asking the obvious.

Could someone be admitted to the workhouse on a nightly basis
eg using it like a night shelter or did people always "live in" so to
speak? I know that mother's oftan used the workhouse as a
maternity hospital and was wondering whether the destitute were
able to use it as a night shelter. If so would they be recorded as
being resident on the census?
