his father had died and his mother emigrated to Australia. He believed this

any record of his father's death yet though between 1901 and 1904.

Hi Andrew,

The children could have been in care for anumber of reasons. One of the
parents may simply have become ill and unable to provide for the family.
There may have been other more distressing circumstances such as one of the
parents simply abandoning the family. There was no welfare state then and
any illness of either parent could have been enough to tip a family into
poverty very quickly. Also illnesses like post natal depression were treated
by placing the woman in a mental hospital, so an emigration story may have
been a cover for something less palatable.

I believe the school at Hanwell was used by a number of London Workhouses
but as they were resident in Newington then Camberwell or Lambeth Unions
would be the place to start looking for the childrens admission records. If
you have an address in Newington I could give you the name of the Union
which would have been closest to them.

As you summise other family members may not have been able to afford to take
the boys in. The majority of families in the early 20th century lived
virtually at subsistence level and extra mouths to feed without extra income
may have been the reason the children ended up in care.

Good luck
