Are the Sutton schools the ones on Peter Higginbotham's site at:

One became Belmont Hospital. The Greenwich Union, which is one
of the Unions Peter lists as served by the schools, includes at
least parts of Deptford.

I get confused about "Hutton Schools". I went to school in the
1960s with boys from "Hutton Poplars" (or something like that)
which was a school in Hutton (Essex) which took boys from
somewhere in East London. They came to the school in Billericay
(Essex) that I went to.

Hi Eric,

I believe the Sutton Schools were "out of town" childrens homes used by the
London Unions, in particular Fulham Union had a workhouse and an industrial
school at Sutton in Surrey, called the London Industrial Colony. I don't
know if other London Unions used the Sutton facilities.

While checking for Sutton, I also noticed that Poplar Union had an
Industrial school at Forest Gate (East London) initially called Poplar
Training School but later renamed Hutton Schools. This fits better with your
geographical reference to Deptford.

In trying to trace more information, it would probably be easiest to start
with the Workhouse where the children were first taken into care, which
would be the one closest to where they lived. Do you have an address for the
family?

Records for both Fulham and Poplar Unions are held at the London
Metropolitan Archives.
