Hi,
Anything that upset the balance of a family could result in them being in
the workhouse. If the main wage earner was unable to work, there would be no
money to pay rent and buy food, so the whole family could be taken into the
house. If the mother was ill and unable to look after children then they
could end up in the workhouse to enable the father to at least carry on
working and earning money.
Some parishes would pay money to a family and enable them to carry on living
in their own home through difficult times, other parishes would take the
whole family into the workhouse and help care for them there until
circumstances improved and they could maintain themselves again.
