Georgina,

My father was born in a Workhouse and I do not beleive my grandmother was a
"tramp".

Apparantly the infirmery at workhouses often had better maternity facilities
than hospitals. At that time most births were at home with the support of
family. For a single mother family support was not always available so they went
to the workhouse.
