Hi Folks,
I am new to this list and have now the need in my family tree research to seek info on workhouses! Sure it happens to all at some stage.

I have a death certificate of an inmate dying in 1855 at Stockton Union Workhouse. Now I looked at the 1851C for this workhouse and although transcribed and available on the shelves of Teesside Archives, he was not there then. I have since been told that I need to look at the 'admissions' records (supposedly held at Durham CRO). Durham don't have them! What would I find out by looking at 'admissions' (assuming that I can eventually track them down)!!

As this possible rellie died of some brain disease (certified for 6 months), I would assume that he entered this workhouse 1854 - 1855. Ideally I would like to know who put him here, and where he comes from. Not a Stockton person at all. He is a sailor and his name is William LECK. My Leck lot, I have traced to Whitby Yorks @ 1787, then prior to this, perhaps Northumberland or Scotland. I strongly suspect this guy to be a son of my elusive James, also a sailor living in Whitby and vanished around 1800. Brother of Simon (also a sailor), who had a daughter married in Stockton at 1840.

Could anyone tell me where I could find records of 'admissions' for Stockton, this time zone. Or anything else that could identify this workhouse stray in Stockton at 1855?

I do know that Teesside Archives in Middlesbrough

hold transcribed in-depth workhouse records for Middlesbrough.

Unfortunately, Stockton are transcribed at census only.

Any pointers, much appreciated.
Thanks
Yvonne
